TWiN | This Weekend in Nashville | July 12 – July 14

While some folks may be rolling up I-65 for a mini Roo at Louisville’s Forecastle Festival this weekend.  There are more amazing local shows than you can imagine this weekend including local fun in a Berry Hill park, a Casio pizza party, local festivals (and local festival announcements), pop, rock, sludge, grunge, twang, and even some killer hip-hop at a “whorehouse”.  Needless to say, it’s another awesome weekend in Nashville.  Get out to see some live music.

FRIDAY

ABERNATHY, YOUNGEST DAUGHTER, WOOLY MAMAS, MOON JR

It’s a nice day! Why not spend it at Azalea Park in Berry Hill, at a totally free, all ages show featuring tunes provided by Abernathy, Youngest Daughter, Wooly Mamas, and Moon JR? Kick off your weekend right! [PO]

BROOKE WAGGONER, VINYL THIEF, VITEK

Soulshine Pizza will once again be hosting Lightning 100’s local artist of the week (Brooke Waggoner) tonight. Brooke will also be joined by local bands Vitek and Vinyl Thief. What, you may ask, do these seemingly disparate acts have in common that could justify cramming them onto a stage normally reserved for one act? Great music? A love for pizza? Actually, the answer is: Casio Privia Pro PX-5S keyboard. The event will be spotlighting this new keyboard, and has some sort of connection to the NAMM show invading the convention center this weekend. Though we’re not quite sure what kind of connection. Let’s just assume they’ll all be playing a bitchin’ new keyboard. The event also runs longer than normal to accommodate the extra acts. [AC]

EAST NASHVILLE UNDERGROUND LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT PARTY

Yes, folks, it’s that time again, East Nashville Underground is right around the corner, and they will continue their recent announcement tradition with a fun gig over at The Stone Fox.  The good times keep rolling tonight with performances from Buffalo Clover, The Al Holbrook Band, and Pretty Ugly… and, of course, the announcement of the  lineup for Summer ENU (which, substantiated rumor has it, is incredible). PAPER ROUTE w/ HALFNOISE, COIN

We went into detail about this one earlier today, but this trio of local bands is a show you seriously don’t want to miss. Paper Route, HalfNoise, and Coin all have an affinity for atmospheric, textured indie rock, and all but the latter don’t often play local shows. Check them out tonight, and find out why we’ve been singing their praises for quite some time! [PO]

THE LONELY H w/ CALE TYSON, MAGNOLIA SONS, DEREK HOKE

Rootsy twang rockers The Lonely H are throwing themselves a little release party tonight over at The 5 Spot to celebrate their newest self titled release.  You can check out their first video “Waiting On A Broken Heart” below to get a vibe of the new record.  If that isn’t your speed, good times are sure to abound with support from Cale Tyson, Magnolia Sons & Derek Hoke. Mathy Jersey-based emo rockers Toasted Plastic are hitting The Owl Farm, joined by a solid bill of  locals: alt-emo rockers Sonsett, folky punk singer Geronimo Jones, and experimental indie rocker Cheng. We’ve really got a deep affinity for this DIY, $5, all ages punk shows, and, if you haven’t checked one out, do yourself a favor and give it a shot! [PO]

PENICILLIN BABY, SHARK WEEK, SHY GUY

When it comes to fuzzy rock music, Springwater always seems to be the spot, and tonight is no different when Chattanooga’s Shark Week roll into town.  Supporting are some of our local favorites Penicillin Baby and Shy Guy.  Speaking of the aforementioned PB, you can check out their newest video for “Jean Jam” below.  Don’t forget your earplugs for this slugfest. Or maybe you could give two shits about that, but are just looking to maximize your weekend-ly intake of beer, loud music, and general shenanigans. In that case, also be at Mercy Lounge. Perhaps best known as the hand-picked opening band for Neil Young & Crazy Horse, folk-rockers Everest are accompanied by Nashville-based songbird Courtney Jaye as well as songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan, who has shared stages with everyone from the New York Dolls to the B-52’s. This lineup of organic, rootsy artists is all that is right and genuine in folk-rock today, so don’t miss this intimate show at the High Watt. [LS]

Hailing from Nashville, folky pop duo Great Peacock, whose named started as a joke, have honed their knack for crafting hook-laden, emotionally dense, and harmony-filled tunes that balance an old folk appreciation, rock sensibilities, and modern indie pop aesthetic. Pinch me…this bill is awesome. Is there anything more relaxing than breezy 90’s alt-rock? How about three bands that helped define the genre, all playing on the same outdoor stage on what is supposed to be a beautiful Saturday night? Count me in. Barenaked Ladies were (and still are) adult alternative radio staples, but Ben Folds Five and Guster always managed to hover just below the radar of the masses, only becoming alt-rock demi-gods  in fairly recent years. Though if we had been around at the start of things, you can bet we would have been all over them. [AC]

When she’s not creating a stir with trips to Cuba, hocking Pepsi, or reuniting with her old band, sometimes Mrs. Jay-Z likes to play arena shows. One of those shows happens to be taking place this weekend in Nashville, and (most likely due to the exorbitant ticket prices), plenty of good seats still seem to be available. Go, bow down to your queen. [PO]

KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS w/ SWIRLIES

I just can’t get enough of Kurt Vile.  After seeing the shoe-gazing nouveau rocker a few years ago for the first time, I can go for days with his soothing rock sounds replaying in my head.  A true talent on the guitar with the songwriting skills coming around to match, it is no surprise that most every festival in the country jumps at the chance to add the Matador Records artist to their bill.  That’s exactly what Forecastle did, but you will get two local chances to see Vile perform locally this weekend.  He’ll be at a surely packed Grimey’s for a free in-store at 3pm on Sunday, before taking on a full set at Mercy Lounge around 9pm.  The latter gets started with a set from The Swirlies, and you can still grab tickets here.  Check out the slow burning “Walkin’ On A Pretty Day” from Vile’s newest release below. Eclectic rapper and party-rocker Andy D brings the ruckus to Whorehouse this Lord’s day accompanied by his wife, Victoria (AKA Anna Vision) and his shredtastic guitarist Sven Midnite. Andy D’s live show is one of the most fun shows I’ve ever attended, so don’t expect to get angsty or political at this one. Get ready to get dirty and get dance-y. [LS]

Also performing, Knoxville’s LiL iFFy, has been dubbed the “greatest wizard rapper alive,” and we’d wholeheartedly agree. You might remember us raving about him after Bonnaroo, and, even if it sounds like a gimmick (which, it kind of is), keep this in mind: wizardry aside, iFFy is one dope MC with an even better stage show. Rap fans, Harry Potter fans, fans of good music: you won’t be disappointed! [PO]

HUNDRETH w/ COUNTERPARTS, BEING AS AN OCEAN, HEART TO HEART

Myrtle Beach melodic hardcore rockers Hundreth will bring their intense live show to The End, along with Canadian hardcore group Counterparts, post-hardcore rockers Being As An Ocean, and melodic post-hardcore punks Heart to Heart. If you’re looking to finish your weekend out with some breakdowns, this is the heaviest, best show in town for you! [PO]

REBIRTH BRASS BAND w/ THE DEEP FRIED FIVE

Harkening back to my college days in New Orleans, Rebirth Brass Band has long been one of the most fun acts in any city anywhere. They bring their hard driving jazz funk, grammy winning, brass ensemble to Third & Lindsley on Sunday night for a show that is sure to move the tables to create some booty moving space. Things get started with local funksters Deep Fried Five, and you can grab your tickets for that one here. [MH]
