[JR]
TROMBONE SHORTY AND ORLEANS AVENUE W/ ROOTS OF A REBELLION
@ Marathon Music Works | 8pm | $15-25 | 18+
Troy Andrews, a.k.a. Trombone Shorty, has dabbled in jazz, funk and even hip hop. With his amazing trombone and trumpet skills, it’s easy to see why he amassed a huge following in his native New Orleans and all over the United States. The Roo alum, and his backing band Orleans Avenue, are making a special stop in on Music City tonight to serenade you with their bad ass brass. Look for local reggae, jam rockers Roots of a Rebellion to get this 18 + party started. [JR]
WILLIAM TYLER BAND AND FRIENDS
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $cheap | 18+
Local virtuoso William Tyler has recently lent more of his time to his solo ventures than his work with Lambchop and Silver Jews. While this show will surely feature some tracks from his first two solo releases, Behold The Spirit and Impossible Truth, we’re sure that the “and Friends” part will make this an evening that you will just have to trust will be incredible. For an example of the virtuosity, check out the 12″ “Whole New Dude,” released earlier this year, below. [MH]
LANGHORNE SLIM w/ JILL ANDREWS
@ City Winery | 8pm | $15-22 | All Ages
One of our favorite local (via PA) indie folk rockers, Langhorne Slim, will be playing an amazing all ages show tonight at City Winery that any fan of local music should be attending. We told you about his rowdy shenanigans at his last gig, at The Basemeant, in this post, and we’ll be interested to see how his performance changes (if at all) for a less than legal drinking age crowd. Fellow indie darling, Jill Andrews will get the party started. [JR]
SATURDAY
CHUCK MEAD w/ HOWLIN BROTHERS
@ Exit/In | 8pm | $15 | 18+
Getting his start playing in ‘80s cult bands, around his hometown of Lawrence, KS, Chuck Mead made the move to Nashville and formed the ‘90s five-member alt-country heavy hitters BR549. Now he’s got a new release with his Grassy Knoll Boys, on local label Plowboy Records. Fellow resident new grass string band Howlin’ Brothers will fill out the night of great live (local) music! [JR]
WILL HOGE w/ LOGAN MIZE
@ Marathon Music Works | 8pm | $20-25 | 18+
Local hero, turned nationally loved Americana rocker, Will Hoge is back in town for a date at Marathon Music Works. We told you all about his Nashville Dancin’ performance from this summer in this post, but if you missed it, here’s your chance to make up for it. Local Logan Mize will add his country flavored flare to the fray. Be sure to get there early, so you don’t miss anything. [JR]
THE WHIGS w/ TURBO FRUITS
@ Mercy Lounge | 9pm | $12 | 18+
Hard to believe The Whigs have held down the garage-rock game for more than 10 years now. With this year’s full length, Modern Creation, the band inject more pop sounds into the mix, with jangly riffs and shout-along refrains. Don’t get it twisted: they’re still a badass rock band, so expect to pump your fists and slam some brews. We’re showing up early for local rock weirdos (and sometimes Misfits cover band) Turbo Fruits. [WD]
THE DIRTY GUV’NAHS w/ CEREUS BRIGHT
@ Cannery Ballroom | 9pm | $15 | 18+
Knoxville sons The Dirty Guv’nahs have never experienced a shortage of pure heart in their roots-rock catalog. This year’s release, Hearts On Fire, leans more heavily on ballads than balls-out romps of records past. No telling if it was influenced by the infamous Rocky 4 training montage. Fellow Knoxvillian Cereus Bright will open with his swaggery folk style. [WD]
LAZERSNAKE
@ The Basement | 9pm | $5| 21+
Are you looking for somewhere to get your party on? Well, you might want to think about heading over to the Basement to catch Lazersnake. This unique act is undoubtedly one of Nashville’s best musical exports; the group excel at bringing together brutal riffs and hilarious lyrics. Best of all, Lazersnake doesn’t take themselves too seriously. At only $5, we can assure this will be one of the most interesting shows going down this weekend. Check it out starting at 9 pm, sharp. [JS]
SUNDAY
ALL THEM WITCHES w/ ADIA VICTORIA
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm | | $10 | All Ages
All Them Witches are a local act that fuse together straightforward rock and psychedelia. Sound like a good combo? We agree. These guys have been on our radar for some time now, mostly because of their well-written tunes and penchant for strong live performances. If you’re looking for a show that’ll blow your mind, piece it together, and then thrust it into another dimension, this is the show for you. Check it out at 3rd and Lindsley with Adia Victoria at 8 on Sunday, and head here for more info! [JS]
