October’s packed schedule of music remains steady this weekend, with everything from dance punk and punk rock legends, local record release shows, folk, jazz, psychedelic, hip hop, metal, and more, with everything from small DIY affairs to arena events to consider, sure to fit most every budget and sensibility. Per usual, we’ve combed through all of the weekend’s happenings, and rounded the best shows up in one easy spot. Start planning your weekend with TWiN!

FRIDAY

AGAINST ME! w/ BLEACHED, THE DIRTY NIL
@ Cannery Ballroom | 7:30pm (6:30pm doors) | $23 | All Ages

Though they’ve circled around us in nearby cities and festival spots, seminal Florida-bred punks Against Me! haven’t played Nashville proper in about three years. That change this weekend, when the group, still buzzing from last year’s excellent new LP Shape Shift with Me, return to headline Cannery Ballroom, with support from buzzy LA punks Bleached and Canadian alt rock trio The Dirty Nil, a stellar trio of acts and perhaps the weekend’s most exciting bill from top to bottom. Longtime readers have surely seen us obsess over AM! in the past, but we can’t overstate their importance in the modern punk, musical, and social landscape, and live, they’re an epic and unrivaled force. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM w/ BIG FREEDIA

More than year now into their unexpected and exciting reunion, after first calling it quits in 2011, seminal dance punks LCD Soundsystem have finally made good the the promise of a new album with this year’s triumphant American Dream. After a year of mostly festival dates and New York residencies, including headlining spots at Bonnaroo and Forecastle, the band are also finally embarking on a short headlining tour, which, as we previously announced, brings them to Nashville proper for the first time since a tiny appearance more than a decade ago, this weekend at Nashville Municipal Auditorium, with random but welcome opener Big Freedia, the Queen Diva. BULLY

As a forewarning, breakout local grunge pop group Bully‘s Grimey’s in-store, in celebration of their personal and driving new sophomore LP, Losing, is giving first access to everyone who pre-ordered the album within the last week and snagged a wristband. As of yesterday, some spots were still available, and will be given first come, fist served. If you plan to go and don’t have a wristband, arrive early! It’s no secret that we absolutely adore the local rockers, who’ve seen unprecedented success since their 2015 debut, Feels Like, and if you don’t manage to catch them this weekend, you’ll have three chances to do so in December. [PO]

GOOD OLD WAR w/ ELISABETH BECKWITT

Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, indie folksters Good Old War formed in 2008 as a trio, following the end of prior project Days Away. Quickly gaining a following with the release of their electrifying debut, Only Way to Be Alone, the prolific band soon found themselves touring with the likes of Dr. Dog, Alison Krauss, Brandi Carlile, and Counting Crows, headlining clubs around the nation, and performing on shows like Conan and Jimmy Kimmel Live! Their 2015 fourth LP, Broken into Better Shape, was actually recorded right here in Nashville, and now with a new EP in tow, Part of Me, and original drummer Tim Arnold back after a brief hiatus, it’s as exciting a time as ever to see the band live. The phenomenal performers hit The high Watt this weekend with Elisabeth Beckwitt, and whether you’re a longtime fan or newcomer, you can’t go wrong. [PO]

THE HARMALEIGHS, KATIE PRUITT w/ JAKE WESLEY ROGERS
@ The East Room | 8pm | $5 | 18+

Nashville duo The Harmaleighs are still riding high on the release of their lastest EP, Hiraeth, and are kicking off a fall tour with a hometown show at The East Room on Friday night.  The story behind the creation that record was a journey.  They gave up their apartment, packed up some belongings and dog, and hit the road for nine months.  The trials, tribulations, and triumphs led to the the inspiration for the EP, and ultimately landed them on their new label, Nettwerk Music Group.  The show kicks off with like-minded locals Katie Pruitt and Jake Wesley Rogers, and can be sure that this is an inclusive and accepting event, as all proceeds will be donated to Hurricane Harvey relief for the LGBTQ community.  Check out the new video for The Harmaleighs’s “Lady Brain” below to get you in the right mood. [MH]

DINNER, ERIKA GLUCK, JAUNDICE

The DIY music refuge Drkmttr has what is sure to best rave of the weekend. Be ready to get loose with Danish (now LA-based) producer and singer Dinner, who is touring in support of last year’s LP Psychic Lovers that recently landed the talented artist on a world tour with Mac DeMarco. Local producers Erika Gluck and Jaundice set the stage for what is sure to be a danceworthy evening. You get three great sets for just seven beans and chances are it’s going late into the night. If you go, plan on sleeping in on Saturday. [JR]

SATURDAY

BEACH FOSSILS w/ SNAIL MAIL, RAENER
@ Exit/In | 9pm (8pm doors) | $15-18 | 18+

Formed in 2009 as a solo vehicle for frontman Dustin Payseur, Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils quickly grew into a full band, albeit one with something of a revolving door of backing players, by the time of their eponymous 2010 debut, initially including Cole Smith and John Peña, who left to form DIIV and Heavenly Beat, respectively. They’ve since achieved near-legendary status in the modern indie scene, avoiding the sophomore slump with dreamy 2013 effort Clash the Truth. Now out in support of their latest, Somersault, the band have stayed dynamic and relevant while many of their peers have faded as the indie scene has cooled,  and they remain a layered, atmospheric and hypnotic live force. Snail Mail and Raener round out their Music City return. [PO]

FAUX FEROCIOUS, TTOTALS, NEST EGG, SMOKE BELOW, THE MEDIUM

One of our favorite local garage rock outfits, Faux Ferocious, released a kick ass EP this past summer, and now they’re topping the bill of tasty low dough house show at The House of Malta, located at 609 Malta Drive. Look for similarly flavored, and familiar local bands Ttotals, Nest Egg, Smoke Below, and The Medium. You can snag all this awesome for just $7, and, if you’re of age, some adult beverages will be provided. All of these killer tunes are brought to you by the good people of Cold Lunch Recordings, so don’t miss this great chance to help support of area scene without spending a ton of money to do it. [JR]

BURTON GREENE, ANDREA JANE CORNELL, AARON ROSENBLUM

Burton Greene rose to popularity during the avant-garde, free jazz movement of the late ’60s, and later resurged with his experimentation in the Klezmer genre.  Regardless of your experience in jazz or your taste in the genre, this is a rare enough opportunity to see one of the forefathers, and the crisp fall weather in the backyard at Fond Object will be a perfectly unique setting to take it in.  Greene will be joined by Louisville-based, experimental instrumentalists Andrea Jane Cornell and Aaron Rosenblum for another awesomely curated event by FMRL. [MH]

LIGHT THE NATIONS

For the second straight year, the thriving west side neighborhood of The Nations is celebrating with a free, all ages, family and pet friendly block party that will feature music, art, and vendors.  Light The Nations takes over 51st street between Georgia and Michigan Avenues, and includes music from the likes of Forest Fire Gospel Choir, Rooker, and Jess Martin, along with rotating DJ sets from a half dozen of  WXNA’s top record curators.  If you are looking for a cheap and chill way to start your Saturday, while still leaving time for later shows, look no further.  Head to lightthenations615.com for more information. [MH]

TYMINSKI

A 25-year member of Alison Krauss’ Union Station, and 14-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski has a new record, Southern Gothic, out this weekend, and to celebrate he is playing an intimate, free in-store engagement at Grimey’s. The Vermont native is one of the premiere vocalists in modern acoustic music, and will be an absolute, one-of-a-kind treat to see him in this setting. Don’t miss it, and get there early, because it could be a packed house. [JR]

SUNDAY

PHOBOS, JR. CLOONEY, CHICO, BUTTHOLE

Local proggy, instrumental, psych rock outfit Phobos are headlining a DIY show to end the weekend, featuring a slew of talented touring and local bands.  Phobos turned heads with their 2015 release I, and recently teamed up for a split EP with local garage rockers Chico, with whom they will share the bill.  The lineup also features sets from proggy St. Louis outfit JR. Clooney and pop influenced punks Butthole.  If you are looking for a kickass, low price, musical ending to your weekend, then Drkmttr is where you’ll want to be.  [MH]

POST MALONE w/ SMOKEPURPP, YUNG PINCH

Part singer, part rapper, part rising rock star, and now boasting the number one song in America (aptly titled “Rockstar”), they’re aren’t many acts out as hot as Post Malone is right now. As a result, his gig at Marathon this weekend, with Chicago rapper Smokepurpp and Young Pinch  the warm up spot, is already sold out. Hopefully you snagged tickets, but if not, better luck next time; good news is, it’ll probably be at an even bigger venue. [JR]

BARNS COURTNEY w/ CRAIG STICKLAND

Alt rocker outfit Barns Courtney is gearing up for a fall tour in support of their highly acclaimed debut album, The Attractions of Youth, and will be kicking the tour off in Nashville this Saturday.  If you haven’t gotten hip to radio friendly hits like “Golden Dandelions,” “Fire,” or “Glitter & Gold,” it’s time to fix that, and you can start below while you are grabbing tickets.  Toronto based indie rocker Craig Stickland is set to open, and just released a new soulful single, “Warning,” to follow up his 2016 release Leave Me To The Wild. [MH]

GRIZFOLK w/ ARMORS

Swedish/American alt-rock five-piece Grizfolk return to Music City to kick out some jams at The High Watt this weekend. You can check out their latest tasty tune below, in collaboration with Jamie N Commons. Look for like minded California based performers Armors to kick things off on possibly the perfect Sunday night show to cap off your weekend. [JR]

NICK LOWE & LOS STRAIGHTJACKETS w/ CUT WORMS
@ City Winery | 8pm | $45-$55 | All Ages

Beloved British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe and local badasses Los Straightjackets have been connected at the hip for the past few years, since the release of their 2013 Christmas album, Quality Street.  In the years since, the two acts have been touring together, and, this spring, Los Straightjackets released a Lowe tribute album titled, What’s So Funny About Peace, Love, and Los Straightjackets.  They’ve reunited this fall for a run together that includes a stop at City Winery on Sunday night.  You can get a taste of what to expect with the single “Rollers Show,” which was just premiered by Nashville Cream, along with a great interview, earlier this week. [MH]
