Nashville indie artist James Droll has been on a roll in 2017 with emotive and sparse R&B singles “Wall” and “Off Beat.” Droll delivers the goods once again with new single “Bad For You.” This go around, the emotional temperature is turned down with an ice-cold beat that elevates his self-aware lyrics and gorgeous vocals. Produced by Joshua Niles and co-written with Grayson Proctor of BIYO, “Bad For You” is a powerful addition to Droll’s growing body of work.
Droll says, “‘Bad For You’ started out as a breakup song derived from a new relationship. It helped me explore and elaborate on the feelings of unease that manifested when the relationship was starting to feel a little more serious than I was comfortable with. I remember one of our last conversations I uttered something along the lines of ‘I’m bad for you’ and the words haunted me after that. In the end, I realized it wasn’t my place to tell someone what I mean to them, and the song became a sort of catharsis to cleanse myself of an ugly thought.”
When it comes to James Droll’s plans for the rest of the year, he’s focusing on staying in the present. “We spend a lot of time looking back at how things should’ve gone or how they could’ve been,” he says. “I don’t want my music to be reactionary. I’d much rather have it as a tool to navigate my present and share that with any ears that need the words as much as I do.”
