Spring seems to be creeping in, if not for the warming weather this week has brought, it is for the plethora of insane shows that are suddenly going on. Call it a fluke, call it the beginning of awesome bands swarming about the country in preparation for the madness in Austin, or just call us lucky… it’s time to take advantage of living in Nashville. Check out our full rundown of shows that No Country thinks are worthy of your consideration this weekend with another edition of TWiN. Get out to see some live music!
FRIDAY
REBECCA ROUBION
@ Soulshine Pizza | 7pm | Free | All Ages
Soulshine continues to bring their A-game with hot pies to order and even hotter music for free! This weekend’s installment features Rebecca Roubion, a Nashville (via Mobile, AL) singer/songwriter with a beautiful voice that sounds hauntingly familiar, but incomparable at the same time. If we had to say she sounds like someone it would be … well, we can’t peg it exactly, which is part of the intrigue. This indie/pop princess has so much to offer, and you can have a taste of her uniqueness below. [JR]
NO COUNTRY PRESENTS: LIZA ANNE RECORD RELEASE SHOW w/ SAM PINKERTON AND ALIZA CARTER BAND
@ The High Watt | 8pm | $7 | 18+
We’ve spent the past few weeks waxing poetic about the debut release of the newest Nashville voice, Liza Anne. You can check out the full preview that we did earlier for this show with special guests Sam Pinkerton and Aliza Carter Band, or you can just sit back and enjoy it all over again with the newly released video for “Rubble.” [MH]
THE BLACK ANGELS w/ ROKY ERICKSON & GOLDEN ANGELS
@ Mercy Lounge | 10pm | $20-25ADV/$25DOS | 18+
While the Liza Anne show put on by our very own No Country Presents wing will be in full swing in The High Watt, an entirely different section of Nashville’s population will be just down the hall at Mercy Lounge, checking out the hypnotic tones of The Black Angels. These Austin natives have dominated the psychedelic rock scene the last few years, and their blend of heavily distorted guitars and captivating drones immediately explain why. The Black Angels take listeners to places they didn’t even know existed, and they’ve extended their hand in invitation to bring you along with them, Nashville. Opening for them is the true OG of the psychedelic genre, Roky Erickson. This veteran has been active in the scene since the 1964, and over the last 50 years, he’s pretty much figured out exactly how to give a stellar performance. Be pumped! [JS]
HARD WORKING AMERICANS ft. TODD SNIDER & DAVE SCHOOLS w/ TURBO FRUITS
@ Marathon Music Works | 8pm | $25ADV/$28DOS | 18+
Hard Working Americans is an apt name for this supergroup. Founded by local legends like Todd Snider, jam band gods like Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Neal Casal (Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood), and Duane Trucks & Chad Staehly (Great American Taxi), these guys probably have triple the road miles of that ’84 Chevy Nova you have been driving since your grandma passed. However, aged whiskey is the most expensive and the best tasting, so roll the hooptie over to Marathon on Friday night for what is sure to be a hell of a good time. [MH]
MAYER HAWTHORNE w/ QUADRON
@ The Cannery Ballroom | 10pm | $18ADV/$20DOS | 18+
Andrew Mayer Cohen, a.k.a. Mayer Hawthorne, is equal parts singer, DJ, rapper, engineer, producer, songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist. This renaissance man of the modern age has a sound that reminds us of the by-gone era of doo wop with a very modern and stylized twist. The “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” inspired video for his smash hit “The Walk” is an instant classic. Throw in the synth-soul sounds of Danish duo Quadron as an appetizer and you’re getting a lot of fun for your hard earned funds. [JR]
BRETT DENNEN w/ FOY VANCE
@ 3rd and Lindsley | 8pm | SOLD OUT | All Ages
Well, friends, this here Brett Dennen gig is sold out… so if you don’t already have your tickets, you may be out of luck and might have to settle for a little Spotify binge as you hold on for his next time through town. For those of you getting pumped for this event (and those consoling themselves) a little ditty from Dennen below. [JM]
MEWITHOUTYOU AND TOUCHE AMORE W/ SEAHAVEN, CARAVELS
@ Exit/In | 7pm | SOLD OUT | 18+
Hope you got tickets for mewitoutYou, Touche Amore, Seahaven, and Caravels at Exit/In when we told you about the show back in December, because this one’s totally sold out. [PO]
SADLER VADEN W/ SONGS OF THE FALL, BILL EBERLE AND RYAN HORNE
@ The Basement | 9pm | $5 | 21+
It was a fall evening on the porch of 12 South Taproom that Cary Ann Hearst (Shovels & Rope) unveiled the talent of fellow Charleston, SC player Sadler Vaden, telling us he’s one of the best guitar players in the game (Shovels & Rope’s background vox are featured on his album Radio Road). Known for lending his skills to Drivin n’ Cryin and Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit, Vaden is a singer-songwriter and producer in his own right. With a sound that is fitting with Golden Smog and Big Star, combined with guitar inspiration from Frank Poncho Sampedro (Crazy Horse) and Pete Townshend (The Who), he’s an artist we’re proud to have residing and making music in Nashville. Americana duo Songs of the Fall, Roots troubadour Bill Eberle and folkie Ryan Horne will open the show. [LT]
BREAST MASSAGE w/ ULTRA S/C AND OXFORD COTTON
@ The End | 9pm | $5 | 18+
Okay, we’d just like to stop here to pose a reasonable question to our readers: with a name like Breast Massage, how could this show possibly be bad? You might not have even heard of the music, but come on. You know you want to see it. Anyways, Breast Massage is the side project of Jake Orrall, whom you might know for his work with local legends JEFF the Brotherhood. Orrall has teamed up with fellow Infinity Cat member Karl Bergman of King Karl for the chance to create the kind of music that just wouldn’t fly in JEFF. If that doesn’t pique your interests, we aren’t sure what will. Opening for Breast Massage is the lovely Ultra S/C and Oxford Cotton, both bands that pride themselves on being some of the loudest, energetic lives shows around. Embedded below is an Ultra S/C video for your viewing pleasure; as it turns out, very little useful useful information comes up when you search for a video of Breast Massage on the internet. Who would’ve thunk it. [JS]
CHANCELLOR WARHOL w/ BENTON-C BAINBRIDGE
@ Oz | 5:30pm | $5
Originally scheduled for yesterday, but postponed due to weather, local rapper Chancellor Warhol will collaborate with NY visual artist Benton-C Bainbridge for an “immersive concert experience,” “Illuminate Paris” for Oz’s new “Thursday Night Things” series. Best part? It’s only $5! [PO]
SATURDAY

In celebration of the release of their upcoming new full-length, Dances with Wolves, Nashville rockers Natural Child will be popping into Grimey’s for an in-store! Check out new single “Out in the Country” below, and catch ’em for a full set next month at Freakin’ Weekend V! [PO]
BLANK RANGE, SHY GUY, CHURCHYARD AND BEN SPINKS SUPERMELT
@ The Basement | 9pm | $5 | 21+
Straight off their Road To Bonnaroo win, Blank Range are already increasing the size of their cannonball splash in the Nashville independent music waters. Add insane local stand outs Shy Guy and Churchyard to the mix, and you sometimes have to wonder how the hell they got Ben Spinks Supermelt to open for them. If you tend to dig the bands that we cover in this little rag, you will FUCKING LOVE this show! [MH]
ANGEL OLSEN W/ NATALIE PRASS AND CIAN NUGENT
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $10 | 18+
The Stone Fox is extra foxy this weekend when Angel Olsen pairs with Natalie Prass for a truly great girls’ night. You can refresh yourself on the many merits of these maids via previous coverage of this special show right this way. And because we’re here to help you make sound music decisions that are good for the soul, here’s a particularly Angel-ic moment below! [JM]
TRISTEN W/ ADIA VICTORIA AND THE WANS
@ Exit/In | 8pm | $10 | 18+
By now, you surely know Tristen. We’ve told you time and time again about the Nashville indie/dance pop transplant, raved about her latest full-length, C A V E S, kept you in the loop about song and video premieres, and tipped you off about plenty of her performances. If you still haven’t had a chance to catch her live (or even if you have), Saturday at Exit/In in your chance! She’s one of the best and most fun live acts in town. and inevitably set to become one of Music City’s next breakout acts. Adia Victoria and The Wans sweeten the deal! [PO]
CAROLINE SMITH
@ The High Watt | 9pm | $18ADV/$10DOS | 18+
Neo-soul and indie rock with a 90’s R&B caramel swirl. No, that’s not a new Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor, it’s a description of Caroline Smith and her amazing sound! The Minneapolis, MN native is on tour for her new album Half About Being Women which showcases her growth as an artist since her time with The Good Night Sleeps. Be sure to check her out and soak in her new and wonderful vibes. [JR]
NOBUNNY W/ THE HUSSY, WEEKEND BABES AND WILD MINDS
@ The End | 9pm | $10 | 18+
WTF? This show is at The End? That means you are going to be totally trashed and think you are tripping when Nobunny finally brings his 1980’s “mask”, leathers, and hose to the stage. We first caught Nobunny opening for… ummmm, somebody (we were trashed), but I have the pictures to prove how totally bad ass it was. Needless to say, we remember the Nobunny more than the headliner, so there you go. Lots of awesome local talent on this bill to get drunk with too! [MH]
REBELUTION W/ CHRIS CAB AND DARK MATTER
@ The Cannery Ballroom | 9pm | $20 | 18+
When Rebelution first began gracing stages with their rocksteady ragga mood back in 2004, they provided exactly the breath of fresh air the reggae scene needed. Here we are now, 10 years and several number one albums later, and Rebelution is still plugging along, just doing their thing like always. To be honest, we couldn’t be more supportive of this behavior. Get your sunny vibes on this Saturday at the Cannery when Rebelution is joined by Chris Cab and Dark Matter. [JS]
JONATHAN WILSON W/ THE BLANK TAPES
@ Mercy Lounge | 9pm | $15 | 18+
This psychedelic folk virtuoso has rubbed elbows with some HUGE names in music including Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Tom Petty. He was also invited to play at “Move Me Brightly”, a tribute to Jerry Garcia in honor of his 70th birthday back in 2012 but now he’s out on his own and one of our most anticipated shows of the entire month! The Blank Tapes are a perfect companion band with their FB page described sounds of “garage pop sensibilities set to ferocious rock riffs”. This should be a crunchy, crunchy show so be there! [JR]
SUNDAY
G. LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE WITH KRISTY LEE
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm | $25 | All Ages
Let’s be straight here: pretty much no other band is as likely to induce a half smile and supremely relaxed sigh than G. Love & The Special Sauce. Garret Dutton (the real name of G. Love) plays music in the vein of Michael Franti or even Jack Johnson. There’s nothing complicated here, just well written tunes and happy vibes, but even just these two ingredients are enough to put on one of the more engaging live shows on the circuit. You can catch G. Love and Special Sauce with the talented Kristy Lee this Sunday at 3rd and Lindsley. [JS]
THELMA & THE SLEAZE, GOODBYE JUNE, AND THE POOR BOYS
@ Exit/In | 8pm | $5 | 18+
We’re pretty sure that we saw this same lineup in the exact opposite order a few months ago. Well, except for Goodbye June being in the middle, because you are in the middle no matter how you stack it. Regardless, if you like adventure in your rock show, then this is your Sunday night excuse to freak out. Another shout out to that fine Dolly Parton cover the ladies of Thelma And The Sleaze laid down at our caroling party back in December. <3 [MH]
