Local pop artist GAYLE, whose rise has been absolutely meteoric over the last couple of years since we premiered her first-ever music video for “dumbass” back in early 2020, has just nabbed her first-ever Grammy nomination, for Song of the Year for breakout single “abcdefu.”
Released last year and part of her first EP, A Study of the Human Experience Volume One, “abcdefu” became a viral sensation on TikTok, and topped streaming charts across the globe. Since its release, the 18-year-old, who grew up in Texas and made the move to Nashville as a preteen to pursue music, has become a breakout success, appearing at fests and award shows (most recently the MTV EMAs), and sharing the stage with legends like My Chemical Romance and and upcoming run with Taylor Swift (including a night at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium).
The Grammys are in the midst of announcing more nominees in real-time, so it’s possible that GAYLE could nab more honors (and very likely other Nashville names will as well). Song of the Year is considered one of the “big four” most prestigious categories, however, a stunning achievement for a new artist, and a category she shares this year with huge names like BeyoncĂ©, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, Lizzo, and more.
