Bonnaroo is back! And when it returns June 16-19 to nearby Manchester, Tenn., for its 18th installment (and 21st year), it’ll be the first in three years, after a sold out 2020 lineup was postponed then canceled due to Covid-19, and last year’s later-than-usual planned Sept. event was heartbreakingly rained out at the last minute.
In a return to form, ‘Roo moves back to its traditional June timeframe this year, and its just-announced lineup is looking like a fitting comeback, with Stevie Nicks, Tool, J. Cole, The Chicks, Machine Gun Kelly, 21 Savage, Flume, Illenium, and Roddy Ricch topping the bill, along with an impressive undercard slate of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Disclosure, The War On Drugs, $uicideboy$, CHVRCHES, LANY, Porter Robinson, Nathaniel Rateliff, Puscifer, Wallows, Herbie Hancock, Gryffin, CloZee, Nothing, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Bleachers, Japanese Breakfast, Tove Lo, The Regrettes, Ludacris, All Time Low, Joy Oladokun, Briston Maroney, COIN, All Them Witches, plus a Jack Antonoff SuperJam and so many more! Even more performers, activities, and additional news about this year’s fest are sure to follow, and we’ll keep you updated in the coming months, but, for now, if you’re hoping to make the trek back to the farm this summer, we’d recommend snagging tickets (and the necessary camping or parking passes) as soon as they go on sale this Thursday, Jan. 13 at noon CST right here. Given how fast 2020 sold out initially, and how badly music fans are surely itching to get back to festival normalcy after two summers of so much uncertainty, we suspect there’s a good chance Bonnaroo will sell out quickly once more.
It feels a bit like deja vu, but reporting on Bonnaroo once again in the midst of a severe winter Covid surge makes it hard to think ahead with optimism, especially with the tremendous rise in Covid cases in Nashville in recent weeks. However, if last year’s early summer pattern of declining cases repeats, and we all make a concerted effort to get the necessary boosters, take appropriate safety measures to mitigate this wave, and make responsible choices between now and June, we have no doubt that no only can ‘Roo return with a decent amount of normalcy, but, fingers crossed, we could an should also be at a much safer stage of the pandemic once more by the time summer hits.
