It’s the first weekend of 2016, and, while we’re sure that you are going to be all over the events of New Years Eve, there are still some cool shows going on around town that are worthy of your consideration after the madness dies down. Have a look at our staff picks below in this week’s edition of TWiN. Have a Happy New Year everyone, and be safe out there!
FRIDAY
LANGHORNE SLIM AND FRIENDS
@ City Winery | 8pm | Sold Out | All Ages
If you’re not familiar with one of the best local talents in the world of hard rockin’ Americana, than shame on you. Langhorne Slim and his band the Law are one of favorite acts around, local or national scale (read this post), so we can’t wait to see who he trots out for this special SOLD OUT show. Unfortunately if you don’t already have tickets, you’ll be on the out side looking in. [JR]
SATURDAY
WILIAM TYLER BAND AND SPECIAL GUESTS w/ LOS COLOGNES
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $10 | 18+
Hometown hero, Lambchopian, Silver Jew, and recent opener for one of the best shows this year (Jack White at Bridgestone), William Tyler returns to his hometown haunt of The Stone Fox for a special night featuring “special guests.” Blog faves Los Colognes open things up for what should be one of the best holiday presents that you could give yourself. The best part? You’ll also be benefitting Planned Parenthood so you’ll be giving it forward by attending. [MH]
AJ CROCE
@ City Winery | 8pm | $15-22 | All Ages
The sons of legends (that would be Jim Croce in this case) often try to follow their father’s footsteps, but few have lived the life of AJ Croce. From nearly being totally blinded to playing with pretty an essential roll call at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Croce has found success as a songwriter of his own. Given that a number of those that he’s collaborated with call Nashville home, the possibility of unannounced special guests seems inevitable. If that doesn’t work out, at least you’ll have the likely chance to hear a Croce sing “Operator.” [MH]
TRVP VIBES feat. DJ TOM IZZO
@ The Basement East | 10pm | $25 | 21+
What seems to be something of an underground dance party curated by DJ Tom Izzo, we can’t find a ton of info on TRVP VIBES, aside from some dope tracks floating around. If you want to keep the weekend party spirit going though, this is your spot. [PO]
AARON LEE TASJAN
@ Acme Feed & Seed | 5:30pm | Free | All Ages
East Nashville songwriting hero, Aaron Lee Tasjan, returns to the site of his recent stellar Acme performance at our showcase early on Saturday. If you are in dire need to get away from the Football Boob Tube or still have family in town, this is an absolute must. Tasjan’s stellar songwriting chops coupled with his wry wit are a perfect fit for pretty much everyone. [MH]
SUNDAY
LIGHT BEAM RIDER, DREAM CULT, CANOPY, POST
@ fooBAR | 9pm | $cheap | 21+
Recent Mississippi to Nashville transplants, Light Beam Rider, have been around our local scene for a while. Friends with fellow Mississippi natives (turned local), The Weeks, and touring with bands that we love from the Music City area (see Diarrhea Planet or Chrome Pony), we are eager to see their jam-tastic post-rock riffs live. Make it to fooBar on time to get Dream Cult, Canopy and Post into you life as well. [JR]
SCOTT MULVAHILL w/ MAY HWEN AND JACOB THOMAS JR.
@ The Basement | 7:30pm | $8 | 21+
If you are looking for a taste of Nashville’s diversity, the bill at The Basement on Sunday night is the answer for you. Double bass wielding popster, Scott Mulvahill, headlines, but you should definitely get there early to check out the genre spanning talents of May Hwen and, one of our best finds of the past year, Jacob Thomas Jr. [MH]
