Third Man Records’ newest solo artist and former Black Belle Olivia Jean is playing a free in-store at Grimey’s this afternoon to celebrate today’s release of her debut solo album, Bathtub Love Killings. The record sees Jean playing almost every instrument on it and was produced by Third Man head honcho Jack White. The show starts at 6 p.m. and, like always, it is free and all ages. Jean cut her musical teeth doing a ton of session work at Third Man, including playing on both of Jack White’s solo albums as well as on records by Karen Elson and Wanda Jackson, in addition to a litany of Blue Series 7-inches, and Bathtub Love Killings, her chance to finally step into the spotlight on her own.
Olivia Jean
We filled you in on Bathtub Love Killings back when the record was announced, and Olivia Jean has since opened for her producer and label head Jack White on a few dates of his most recent tour. Jean has caught some undeserved flak from the Third Man and Jack White fan community, in the opinion of this feminist music writer, and this in-store at Grimey’s is a free chance to see for yourself if the multi-instrumentalist songwriter really has the chops to stand on her own and become more than just a seasoned session musician. If you’re impressed, Third Man is throwing a record release party for the chanteuse on Devil’s Night, and there is the option to pay for a ticket with a donation of your own blood to the Red Cross if you’re short on cash.
Olivia Jean will perform Tuesday, October 14 at Grimey’s. The show is all ages, begins at 6 p.m., and it’s free!
Olivia Jean’s voice is definitely protooled or manipulated on the record because she sure does not sound like this live. I saw her at Grimeys. This girl can not sing to save her life. She sucks live.
How is she signed to any label much less someone like Jack White White Stripes? She is a poor imitation of Meg.
