Hometown favorites Old Crow Medicine Show are bringing their punky string band act to Nashville’s best outdoor amphitheater the Woods at Fontanel this Saturday, August 23 and it’s sure to be a hollerin’ good time. Americana duo Shovels and Rope are opening on the eve of a new record release. Summer is coming to a close faster than you might think, and there’s not a much better way to take advantage of these final summer weekends than listening to good, old fashioned pickin’ in the great outdoors.
Click through to learn more about the lineup and Old Crow Medicine Show’s new record. Tickets for this one are almost sold out, so don’t dilly dally. Also, those in the know will tell you to, make plans to head over to Café Fontanella (it’s on the grounds) a bit early to catch a set from our pals Don Gallardo Band (who played our showcase at Acme Feed & Seed on Tuesday) before the show, and then hang with them again while traffic dies down after OCMS winds down. It’s a good chance for you to grab a bite, enjoy some AC, have a cool beverage, or just sober up before making the journey back to more civilized lands.
Old Crow Medicine Show
Old Crow Medicine Show have been Nashville favorites and critical darlings for years. One of the best groups to come out of the new folk movement, their music never takes itself too seriously even though all members are world-class musicians. Their latest album, Remedy, came out earlier this summer and we gave it an 8-out-of-10 review. Another solid effort in the group’s body of work, the record sees them again collaborating with none other than Bob Dylan for the songwriting credits on the first single, “Sweet Amarillo.” Old Crow has written with the legend before, reworking Dylan outtakes for their most famous song, “Wagon Wheel,” a song that at this point is becoming a singing-around-the-campfire staple. If you didn’t get to catch them at one of the various pop-up shows they played around town when they released Remedy, now’s your chance to see Old Crow in action.
Shovels and Rope
Shovels and Rope are an Americana duo from Charleston that spends a lot of time in Music City. They recorded their upcoming album, Swimmin’ Time, here at Dualtone Records and are doing a special late-night in-store at Grimey’s the day after opening for Old Crow Medicine Show to promote the album on the eve of its release. We already told you a bit about them last week, but if you dig Old Crow then you should definitely get to the gig early enough to check out this very talented husband and wife team.
Old Crow Medicine Show and Shovels and Rope will perform Saturday, August 23 at The Woods at Fontanel. The show is all ages, begins at at 7 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.), and a few tickets are still available for $39.50.
