On Dec. 19, we’re teaming up with old pals East Nashville Underground at The Stone Fox to bring you a night full of Christmas caroling fun with more than 20 of your favorite local bands. Those of you who joined us before will remember arm in arm singing, shenanigans, laughs galore, holiday drinks, and some awesome takes on the Christmas standards. This year we can expect more of the same from acts like ELEL, Buffalo Rodeo, The Combo, Sad Baxter & Luella who will be joining with performers including, Jung Youth, Beech Benders, Tesla Rossa, Twiggs, Hot Tub Club, Waterfall Wash, Hotel War, Gardening Not Architecture, Photo Ops, American Dream, and Tetherball!
This year also features some fresh blood from the likes of Yankee Blood, Charlie Abbott, Phantom Farmer, & Jacob Thomas Jr.! And, of course, no caroling evening would be complete without Mr. Steve The Music Man (aka Steve Lee) carrying us out in a full on, some of us slurring, sing-a-long.
Want more? No problem. This sucker is FREE! That’s right. Come one, come all to this celebration of friends and music at The Stone Fox starting at 7pm on Dec. 19! We’ll also be keeping it charitable again this year by accepting unused pet food and other pet items at the door to donate to two of our favorite local animal rescues (heroes) A Place To Bark & Nashville Cat Rescue!
For the rest of the week, we’ll be getting you in the mood with little previews of each of the bands that will be performing carols on Saturday. If you want more information about the event, you can RSVP at the Facebook event page, get hip to the bands from the 8 o’clock hour here, spend some time with the artists performing in the 9 o’clock hour, and now head below to find out who will be taking us into the 10 o’clock hour. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the final preview, and we’ll see you on Saturday!
JUNG YOUTH | “ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE” | 10:00 PM
It’s been a hot year for Justin Donahue (a.k.a. Jung Youth.) We premiered the summer banger “Ice Cream Man” ahead of his set opening up for hip hop legends and Wu-Tang royalty, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah back in July. He burst back on the scene with a bombastic Cherub backed track, “Up,” in September, and then dusted off the Eurythmics sampled “Sweet Dreams” just a month later. If you haven’t gotten hip yet, then you should click everyone of those links to learn more about one of Nashville’s fastest rising rappers. Head out on Saturday to see that his musicianship run way deeper than just clever rhymes when he puts his magical touch on the Johnny Marks written, Brenda Lee classic “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.”
SAD BAXTER | “LITTLE SAINT NICK” | 10:10 PM
Sad Baxter describe their genre as “sadness,” but the grungy power pop found on their most recent EP falls somewhere between Jimmy Eat World and Weezer in energy, which makes us question that self description. It’s also hard to imagine putting too much sadness into a toe tapper like their choice of carols, “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys.
WATERFALL WASH| “DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT’S CHRISTMAS (ORIGINAL)” | 10:20 PM
Waterfall Wash dropped their stellar EP, Foreign Chords, right after last year’s event, and have been steadily building a fan base locally and beyond. A truly talented troupe, they won’t be held down performing a traditional holiday standard. They’re going to show their love of the holidays (and holiday songs) by creating a new standard of their own, “Do You Know When It’s Christmas.”
THE COMBO | “RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER” | 10:30 PM
An essential who’s who of musicians that play as an ever revolving lineup known as The Combo will bring a fresh vibe to the rock leaning lineup thus far. Check out their beautiful rendition of a latin jazz take on the Johnny Marks written, Gene Autrey performed “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” below to see what you are in store for.
AMERICAN DREAM | “LAST CHRISTMAS” | 10:40 PM
Retro, western-influenced, dream pop outfit, American Dream have been turning heads since landing in Nashville from New York a couple of years ago. Since hitting the stage to carol last year, they have released a handful of singles, reportedly have a new record in bag, and even hopped on a bill with Veruca Salt over the summer. This year, they plan to bring us their version of Wham’s “Last Christmas,” and you can hear how they get in the spirit with last year’s original, “Let It Snow,” below.
HOT TUB CLUB | “WISH IT WAS CHRISTMAS TODAY” | 10:50 PM
Mired in a sexy blend of dope beats, slick rhymes, and general hilarity, Hot Tub Club have been steadily pinging our radar over the past year, and brought the caroling party to their knees last year (or was that the year before when mainstay Brandon Jazz headsurfed the crowd?). So, why is it not surprising that the Hot Tub Club is bringing the Saturday Night Live smash “Wish It Was Christmas Today” to life for us?
The Fourth Annual Christmas Carol Show takes place Saturday Dec. 19 at The Stone Fox. The show is 18+, begins at 8pm (doors at 7pm), and it’s totally FREE!
