Nashville based by way of England, folk, blues, and Americana duo Ida Mae are one of the buzziest new acts in their musical sphere, met with critical acclaim for their recent debut LP, Chasing Lights, and honed from years of success in their previous alt rock outfit Kill It Kid. Influenced by the classic, rootsy, American sounds that made them want to play music in the first place, and led to their own creative, and eventually romantic, pairing, the husband and wife duo are set to play their latest local show Dec. 12 at Mercy Lounge, with support from another buzzy up and coming Nashville transplant, singer-songwriter Logan Ledger. IDA MAE

Though English folk, blues, and Americana duo Ida Mae only released their debut album, Chasing Lights, this summer, and only within the last couple of years have they really managed to resonate with a wider audience under their current, relatively new moniker, the pair, husband and wife Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean, are no strangers to creative collaboration, nor to musical success. When they first met, becoming musical partners long before blossoming into romantic ones, Turpin was playing old-time acoustic country blues at open mics, and Jean was similarly singing classic jazz standards, bonding over an affinity for American music of a similar era, and even notably covering Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee’s “Ida Mae” as they began to connect and perform together, the tune they would borrow their band name from years later. While attending university in Bath, Somerset, over a decade ago, the pair, still barely in their teens, formed the group Kill It Kid, who, from 2008 to 2015, would go on to achieve moderate success across Europe, releasing three albums and even nabbing a major label record deal. However, the band’s commercial trajectory and more alternative and grunge geared sound proved not to be where Chris and Stephanie truly wanted to funnel their creative energy, and, after opting to disband the group, they returned to their folkier, delta blues inspired roots in Ida Mae, channeling artists like Robert Johnson, Son House, and Charley Patton. The band’s genesis came from a six-month writing stint in Turpin’s native Norwich, England, eventually winding up under the production guise of elusive and famed producer Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Paul McCartney, Laura Marling, Kings of Leon), who not only played drums on the album, but helped them fully realize their sound, capturing nearly everything live in the studio. Now based right here in Nashville, Ida Mae have been drumming up buzz around the globe throughout the year, praised both for their incredible debut and their well-honed, harmonic, and genre-bending live show, which has landed them on the road with acts like Greta Van Fleet, Blackberry Smoke, Marcus King, and The Lone Bellow, and even an appearance at this year’s Bonnaroo. LOGAN LEDGER

Much like Ida Mae, singer-songwriter Logan Ledger is Nashville transplant with an affinity for classic folk, Americana, and country music, garnering a whole lot of buzz at the start of what’s shaping up to be an exciting career. Raised in the Bay Area, Ledger was something of a bluegrass prodigy in his youth, but a love of classic country and well as a decisive emersion in the west coast sounds of his upbringing helped shape and steer his career. After college, Logan spent some time back home playing in a bluegrass band, but the strong pull of Nashville eventually led him to Music City, where doubling down on writing and performing eventually caught the attention of legendary, Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, who signed the young artist and has handled production duty on his well-received introductory work, including this year’s debut EP, I Don’t Dream Anymore, and a forthcoming debut full-length. Crafting a sort of country noir, almost a contemporary update on classic west count country, Ledger uniquely infuses elements of acid rock, surf music, and baroque ’60s pop into his style, landing with a sort of dark, dreamy, moody, and timeless sound all his own, and making him a perfect compliment to this bill.
