As we announced earlier this year, local brewery Southern Grist are already getting a jump on New Year’s Eve plans, unveiling a stacked lineup of performers for a Dec. 31 party at their new West Nashville taproom in The Nations. Dubbed “Lager in the Night,” the NYE bash will feature Southern and garage rock favorites The Weeks in the headlining spot, joined by psych folk favorites Liz Cooper & The Stampede, and buzzy indie pop up and comers and most recent addition The Foxies kicking things off. A few more NYE show have cropped up since, and inevitably many more will be announced in the coming months, but this all-local, affordable, cozy, and rocking outing is going to be hard to top. THE WEEKS

Blending southern rock with garage, alternative, and indie rock sounds, The Weeks started in high school, and produced several early albums before ultimately relocating to Nashville, and, subsequently, signing to Kings of Leon’s Serpents & Snakes record label. Their breakthrough came in the form of 2012 (originally 2011) release, Gutter Gaunt Gangster, with 2013’s Dear Bo Jackson helping expand their critical and commercial presence, and further realize the evolution of their sound. The band found wider buzz with 2014 EP Buttons, and took a healthy amount of time to refocus and meticulously craft last this year’s third full-length, Easy, through new label Lightning Rod, which, after chronicling their past with a collection of unreleased tracks the year prior, firmly pushes the band into the future, with their most mature, cohesive, and confident effort to date. Over the years, we’ve seen the group grow from small rooms to festival staple, club headliner, and international touring artist, and we couldn’t be prouder of their success. Eclectic in sound and energetic in their live performance, The Weeks are truly one of the most exciting rock bands to emerge from Nashville in recent years, and their impressive, raucous live show sounds like a pretty phenomenal way to kick off a new year!

LIZ COOPER & THE STAMPEDE

An act we’ve had our eyes on for a number of years now, even tapping them for our Acme Feed & Seed showcase back in 2016, Liz Cooper & The Stampede have rapidly risen from Nashville newcomers to scene mainstays, and that isn’t likely to be the ceiling for long either. Cooper’s brand of psychedelic folk, highlighted by her excellent guitar chops, is a treat to watch live, and across early EPs, live sessions, and both headlining outings and prominent supporting slots over the past few years, this band has cemented their reputation as one of the most exciting rising artists to watch. Just this summer, the trio dropped their excellent new full-length, Window Flowers, through Sleepyhead Records, and with it achieved the best distillation yet of their decade spanning and genre-bending sound, a personal and wistful and propulsive effort that will sure land on many best-of local lists. Liz Cooper & The Stampede are perfectly paired with The Weeks, and another group you’re sure to have a blast ending the year and beginning a new one with.

THE FOXIES

Since landing on our radar with their blissfully poppy, retro, energetic debut EP Oblivion in 2016, locals The Foxies have steadily become one of the coolest names in the Nashville pop scene, recently winning the Road to Roo competition to play Bonnaroo, the latest stepping stone in their inevitable rise to broader acclaim. Helmed by dynamic and enigmatic singer Julia Lauren Bullock, the roots of the project trace back to Phoenix, Arizona, and started as a band with early buzz thanks to single “Floods,” before more or less morphing into a solo vehicle for Bullock, and apparently back into a band as they’ve laid their roots in Nashville, resonating online thanks to further singles like “Wander in Lust” and “Box Wine,” and for their glam inspired, ’70s and ’80s referencing, unabashed pop sound, rooted with a modern indie pop flair. An electrifying, confident, and cool live experience, and thanks to Julia’s one-of-kind, magnetic style and incredible voice, The Foxies are an essential rising Nashville group, and an excellent choice to get this party started!
