Newish Third Man Records artist Olivia Jean is playing her first real Nashville solo show outside Jack White’s compound tonight at The Stone Fox, so those who’ve heard the buzz about the chanteuse but missed her short in-store at Grimey’s and/or didn’t have the blood to give to attend her record release party on Devil’s Night at Third Man, I encourage you to come check her out and judge the multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter for yourself. Also on the bill are the female-fronted East Nashville industrial hard rockers Yumi and the System, who are gaining a lot of attention for being brand new to the scene, and male-female minimalist duo composed of former members of The Clutters, Mystery Twins. If you read my articles, you know that I love telling you about the great women playing rock and roll in Nashville, and this evening The Stone Fox has lined up three great acts with women in charge.

OLIVIA JEAN

Back in October, former Black Belle and constant Third Man session musician Olivia Jean released her first solo record, Bathtub Love Killings. She wrote all the songs and plays pretty much every instrument on the album. Those who’ve been paying attention to the label already know that she can play, as she has lent her hand on one instrument or another to tons of Third Man projects including both of Jack White’s solo records. Now, Jean has to see if she can win over an audience with her rockabilly tales of heartbreak out from under White’s shadow.

YUMI AND THE SYSTEM

The East Nashville based industrial alternative rockers Yumi and the System are new but they’ve been getting a lot of attention for their debut record Wonders of Origin and the couple video releases they’ve got under their belt so far. Yumi’s rough electronic sound is a different and welcome addition to Nashville’s scene, and frontwoman Amy Wright is an awesome androgynous terror. The band’s newest video for “Back of the World” debuted here on the site and you can check it out below.

MYSTERY TWINS

The two members of Mystery Twins spent over a decade as half of the acclaimed band The Clutters, but with their new project they’ve stripped back as much as possible to create a sound they describe as the Everly Brothers vs. Reigning Sound. They bring to mind The Dutchess and the Duke and the Vaselines, and have a fondness for early rock and roll covers.

Olivia Jean, Yumi and the System, and Mystery Twins will perform tonight, December 5 at The Stone Fox. The show is 18+, begins at at 9 p.m., and tickets are available for $7.
