4,500-Capacity Amphitheater, Entertainment Complex Coming to Murfreesboro in 2023

Notes Live, a growing Colorado-based player in the live music scene, has announced plans to construct a new amphitheater and entertainment complex in the heart of nearby Murfreesboro, adding to the area’s ever-growing options for large outdoor concerts. The $40 million project, described as a “public-private partnership,” is eying an 18-acre parcel located near Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford and the Fountains at Gateway, off of Medical Center Parkway and Gateway Boulevard, not far from downtown Murfreesboro. The venues are expected to open in 2023.

The centerpiece of the complex will be a 25,000-square-foot outdoor amphitheater dubbed The Sunset Music Colosseum on the River, with a capacity of around 4,500. The project will also feature a 1,400 capacity indoor venue, Boot Barn Hall (modeled after Notes Lives’ premiere venue in Colorado Springs), and a restaurant called Bourbon Brothers Smokehouse & Tavern. For reference, downtown Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater has a capacity of about 6,800 while Franklin’s new FirstBank Amphitheater holds about 7,500 (The Sunset will be roughly comparable in size to the former Woods at Fontanel, which managed to attract some major tours over the years).

Notes Live is currently constructing a similar complex outside of Atlanta, and is eyeing projects in Texas and Florida as well. While the Nashville area’s recent trend of local venue closures does give us pause whenever we see outside investors announcing new, competitive spaces, part of Notes Live’s strategy is build in markets just outside of major cities, where no other comparative venues currently exist. They also aim to market to a more middle-aged demographic, making this project more a complimentary space than one that directly threatens any current establishments.
