Fans of indie/electronic, lush, layered, and vibey music with a strong vocal and lyrical focus take note: LA DJ/producer shallou and mysterious masked electronic artist Slow Magic are hitting the road for a co-headlining run, bringing their complimentary, trendy, and buzzed about stylings to The Basement East on March 19, with Australian up and comer Yoste tapped to support. It’s a particularly cool bill that should satisfy both EDM fans and those who simply like synth-soaked indie music, and tickets are still available right here while they last! We’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan, so if you’d rather try your luck, read on for more about the show and enter for a chance to win below.

SHALLOU

The musical alias of DJ, producer, and performer Joe Boston, who was born in Washington, DC, and spent time in New Orleans and Chicago before settling in Los Angeles, shallou fuses downtempo indie, electro house and ambient tones with lyrical and vocal driven songwriting, resulting in a unique happy/sad style (melancholy themes juxtaposed with bright beats), which has set the project apart. Formally formed in 2014, it was 2017 EP All Becomes Okay which really helped shallou break out in a major way, earning praise from countless tastemaking outlets throughout the blogosphere, and helping Boston rack up hundreds of millions of streams. Last year’s Souls, similarly, generated an endless stream of buzz, harboring just as much accessibility and crossover appeal, and having already shared the stage with acts like Petit Biscuit, Honne, Blackbird Blackbird, Roosevelt, Basecamp, El Ten Eleven, and Big Gigantic, shallou, who performs live as a duo, certainly stands as one of the coolest, vibe-iest, and most approachable fixtures in the electric scene, particularly for those who love hooks and more conventional, lyric-driven song structure.

SLOW MAGIC

Like many an artist in the electronic space (Daft Punk, Deadmau5, and Marshmello are just some of the most famous examples), Slow Magic emerged in 2012 as yet another mysterious figure, remaining, so far, completely anonymous, with not even his name, age, or hometown revealed to the public. Since 2012 debut Triangle, and through his most recent LP, 2017’s Float, the enigmatic performer has torn up the blogosphere, amassed countless streams, and appeared on stages as legendary as Coachella and toured with artists like Gold Panda, all the while refining his chilled out, lush, happy, and vibey sound, which has a particularly percussive element and incorporates drums in live shows (that he’s a drummer in addition to a producer in DJ, is one of the few facts about Slow Magic that we can gather). Like shallou, Slow Magic is refreshingly modern, multi-faceted, and pop accessible; more than suitable for knowledgeable EDM fans, but easy to digest for newcomers alike.

YOSTE

With lush, stunning, layered textures and tones, young, up and coming Australian singer Yoste, the musical alias of producer and musician Kurt Sines, definitely feels like a direct line to the rest of this bill, but his sound, which hinges so much on his hypnotic, Bon Iver-esque voice, seems more like an electronic-rooted pop project than an electronic DJ/producer venture with a strong vocal focus to our ears (semantics, we know, but Yoste feels particularly well-suited to slip between scenes). He only released his debut EP, Try to Be Okay, last month, but thanks to standout tracks like “Blue” and “Arc,” which have led to tens of millions of plays already, we have a feeling you’ll be seeing very big things in this promising newcomer’s future. Get there early and see what he’s all about!
