Earlier this week, we brought you an exclusive premiere of Am I An Adult Yet?, the phenomenal new EP from local indie rock outfit American Roommates. Today, the record is officially out digitally (and you can pre-order a physical copy on cassette), and tonight, Feb. 22, the group will celebrate with a release show at The East Room, joined by a stacked slate of likeminded acts H.A.R.D., The Deacons, and Quiet Oaks. For just $5 (which goes to benefit the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition), this is, without a doubt, the best under the radar show you’ll find all week, and a great way to sample some seriously buzzworthy local talent.
Originally from Columbus, GA, American Roommates relocated to Nashville a few years back, and have since fully integrated into the local DIY scene, performing at clubs and alternative spaces all over town at an increasingly frequent clip. The band’s 2015 EP Tomahawk served as an admirable introduction, but as they’ve increasingly become an exciting and buzzy fixture in the local indie scene and further cemented their sound while solidifying their permeant lineup, we’ve been eagerly awaiting new tunes from the group’s current incarnation.
Partially recorded at the Whites Creek house/studio where the band lives (they are actual roommates), Am I An Adult Yet? was produced by Will Bishop, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jake Saghi, and marks the seventh release for burgeoning local boutique label The Haters Ball, run by American Roommates drummer Chase Loyd. Lead single “Michael Jordan,” for which the band recently released a music video (below), gave us a taste of what to expect, and the rest of Am I An Adult Yet? delivers in spades, showcasing a layered, ambitious, experimental, hypnotic, impassioned, and dynamic style, which should immediately appeal to fans of similar high-art and genre-bending indie bands like Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse. Don’t miss the chance tonight to see this exciting local group celebrate their best release yet live!
American Roommates, H.A.R.D., The Deacons, and Quiet Oaks will perform tonight, Feb. 22 at The East Room. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $5 at the door.
