YONI & GETI
If you’re a fan of innovative and experimental indie music, you’ve probably heard at least a few songs from the members of Yoni & Geti. Made up of WHY? member Yoni Wolf and artist and producer David Cohn, better known as Serengeti, the duo decided to take on a new name for their latest collaborative project. The two previously worked together on Serengeti’s 2011 record Family & Friends, which mixed thought-provoking rap verses with catchy beats and carefully layered instrumentation.
In May, they released a concept album called Testarossa, which follows the relationship between a fictional, burnt out rock star and a cocktail waitress. This quirky and emotional project is filled with lush and hypnotic production that gives the album a feeling of intimacy and sometimes unrelenting truth. It’s a truly well-crafted record that will likely take on a whole new life in the live setting, so make sure you catch them during their stop in Nashville.
CHAOS EMERALDS
We’ve been raving about local electro-pop outfit Chaos Emeralds over the last few months, and for good reason. Members Daniel Ellsworth (of Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes) and Kyle Andrews have come out of the gates swinging in 2016. After dropping their debut single “Too Gone” and an incredible take on Ryan Adams’ classic sad jam “Come Pick Me Up,” they supplied a killer video for the wonderfully poppy track “Animal Kingdom.” If you somehow haven’t been converted into a fan after sampling their already impressive catalog of music, go check out their live set and prepare to have your mind blown.
BASHFUL HIPS
Ian Fellerman is the mastermind behind Bashful Hips, an ever-evolving musical project that has steadily grown out of a variety of personal experiences over the years. In 2012, Fellerman recorded and released a new album over the course of fourteen months. The project was a musical response to losing his “home, band, studio, car, identity and best friend” earlier that year, and resulted in a collection of moving, poignant and strikingly honest material. Fellerman has just released After I Died, I’ve Never Felt So Alive, a record that tackles everything from the value and authenticity of love to the legitimacy of identity and power in the United States.
Yoni & Geti, Chaos Emeralds and Bashful Hips will perform Wednesday, July 13 at The High Watt. The show is 18+, begins at 9 p.m. (doors at 8 p.m.), and tickets are available for $15.
