Kent Goolsby & The Gold Standard have been on our radar since we first spun our advance copy of the new record, No Substitute For Handsome, and we jumped at the opportunity to premiere a new single on the album’s release date. Like the previously released singles “Outskirts Of Love” and “This Daddy (Has Run Out Of Strut)”, the single “Dog Days (Have Lost Their Bite)” features a throw back sound, replete with a sweet underlying horn line, that is as easy going as a summer day. And, if you follow along in the lyrics, you’ll probably find a familiar feeling that you have when you are heading to work on a sweaty summer day, reminiscing about how free the summers of your youth used to be, and wondering where those long days of careless playfulness have gone.
The album was recorded in Kent’s East Nashville home, and features a pretty stacked plate of players including Steve Daly (guitar & mandolin), Dan Eubanks (upright bass), Roy Agee (horns), Chris Housman (fiddle), and Anna Goolsby (vocals). Mixing and mastering duties fell to Joey Kneiser (Glossary) at his Young Buffalo studio.
No Substitute For Handsome drops today, and you can grab your copy wherever you buy your tunes. If you need some convincing, head below to listen to “Dog Days (Have Lost Their Bite)”.
