The culmination of nearly a decade of special concept 12″ releases, inspired by the Chinese calendar, Canadian hardcore punk outfit Fucked Up are, for the first time, taking their Zodiac series on the road, performing selections from the seven-part epic each night with help from Canadian dance rock trio DOOMSQUAD, who will not only join Fucked Up, but serve as openers. The tour makes a very special stop in Nashville this Sunday, July 5 at Third Man Records’ Blue Room, where, per usual, the band will record their show live, direct to acetate. It’s rare to see tickets still available for a Third Man show so close to its date, but, at least for now, you can snag ’em for $10 right here, and we absolutely can’t recommend their once-in-a-lifetime experience enough. Read on for more!
FUCKED UP
One of the most explosive, influential, and unabashedly punk groups of the past decade, Canada’s Fucked Up have managed to transcend their underground, DIY roots to become a critically celebrated band, without compromising the sound or principles they were founded on. Unsurprisingly, their live shows are raw, unpredictable, rowdy, and in-your-face, and their numerous Nashville appearances over the past few years have been nothing short of legendary. We loved the group’s last proper LP, last year’s Glass Boys, but this tour cycle centers on something extra special: their near decade-long, Chinese calendar inspired 12″ record concept Zodiac series of releases, most recent being this year’s Year of the Hare. Combining with members of DOOMSQUAD to form a nine person band, Fucked Up will play special selections from the series, likely resulting in a much more experimental, dense, and less aggressive but equally as impressive performance. It’s kind of surreal to imagine the energy of this band being transported to the Third Man stage, and we can’t wait to witness it.
DOOMSQUAD
Made up of siblings Trevor, Jaclyn, and Allie Blumas, Toronto’s DOOMSQUAD boast an experimental dance music sound with heavy influences of trance and psychedelia. Celebrating the release of their latest EP, Pagentry Suite, the band, though a far-cry from hardcore, share Fucked Up’s appreciation for layered, unorthodox instrumentation and genre-bending tendencies. They’re an incredible (and edgy) choice to help fill out the Zodiac material, and will definitely be a fun, diverse opener for this unique bill.
Fucked Up and DOOMSQUAD will perform Sunday, July 5 at Third Man Records. The show is all ages, begins at 6 p.m. (doors at 5 p.m.), and tickets are available for $10.
