Following the release of his critically-acclaimed album Flatlands, Ryan Culwell took SXSW by storm, and recently announced a string of dates with Hayes Carll as well as a couple hometown shows, including a solo set at Music City Roots on June 3 and a performance at The Basement East on June 18 with Ben Nichols of Lucero. Rolling Stone Country named Culwell one of their “21 County-Music Artists You Need To See” at SXSW and Ann Powers of NPR Music also caught one of his SXSW sets and said, “His songs themselves wring grace from plain and often dark details, expressing the realities of class and region in ways that many other writers barely touch. Here was a working man, a working musician, delivering his best. It was a star turn, no matter how many people witnessed it.”
Culwell’s been on the No Country radar for while… we previewed his opening set at Amy Speace’s CD Release show at The Basement in April, and then caught his Local Artist of the Week set at Soulshine later that month. Don’t miss another opportunity to catch this fast rising star. Watch his performance of “I Think I’ll Be Their God,” live for Guitar World Acoustic Nation, below.
