STRIKING MATCHES
@ Grimey’s | 6pm | FREE | All Ages
Genre-defying country/rock/pop/blues duo Stirking Matches dropped their T-Bone Burnett-produced debut, Nothing But The Silence, earlier this week, and are already seeing overwhelmingly positive response. One of the best songwriting teams in Music City, the group have already begun to find worldwide acclaim for their immense skill and unparalleled live show, and have had their music prominently featured on the likes of ABC’s Nashville. In a “country” scene where so few acts are thinking outside of the box, Striking Matches are a breath of fresh air, and, in support of the LP, you can catch ’em for free this weekend at Grimey’s. [PO]
VINYL THIEF w/ NORTHERN FACES, SINCLAIR
@ The High Watt | 9pm | $8 | 18+
Nashville indie electro-rockers Vinyl Thief have long been a site favorite, and, after an incredibly busy 2014, which included the release of their phenomenal debut album, Fathoms, the group have cooled things down on the local side lately. That means you should absolutely jump at a chance to see them live, and we already know they’ve got what it takes the bring the house down at The High Watt. With Northern Faces and Sinclair, this should be a no-brainer. [PO]
WHITEY MORGAN AND THE 78’s w/ CODY JINKS
@ Exit/In | 9pm | $12-15 | 18+
Hailing from Flint, MI, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s could be considered the complete antithesis of the popular country music scene. Frontman Morgan pens songs that are so bruised, gritty, and authentic that it is almost surprising that he and his band have a show in Nashville. Luckily, Exit/In is hosting the outlaws Friday with Cody Jinks opening. Check out this video for Morgan’s dark take on Towne Van Zant’s “Waiting Around to Die,” the first single from the band’s upcoming album Sonic Ranch (due out May 19). [TJJ]

Sawyer are a new local indie folk pop duo composed of vocalist Emma Harvey and guitarist/mandolin player Kel Taylor. The band grew out of Taylor’s planned solo project and given the buzz Sawyer have gotten since starting last year, they’re definitely locals to have on your radar if you like infectious folky melodies. Opening is Nashville-based solo artist YØUTH, who we’ve told you about before, and the midwestern transplants N0.VI. [JSa]

SUNDAY
THE SHADOWBOXERS
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm | $10 | All Ages
Atlanta pop/rock trio The Shadowboxers caught the attention of Justin Timberlake with their cover of his song “Pusher Love Girl,” and impressed him so much that he came to their show at Mercy Lounge back in December.
