Music On TV

New year, old feature. The holidays are over and late night programming is back, so welcome to Music on Television, a roundup of the best live performances each week on TV. Not only are we saving you time by wading through everything for you, but we also hope to help you discover some great up and coming bands, many of which will be passing through Nashville in the near future!

Don’t forget, we’re also adding tour dates and ticket links for the artists performing in town and in surrounding areas. Get those DVRs set for:

MONDAY | 1.20

DON’T MISS: THE FLAMING LIPS
on Last Call with Carson Daly
[NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c
]

Legendary psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips, whose frontman Wayne Coyne I recently interviewed for Alternative Press, infrequently appear on late night talk shows but, when they do, it’s always fantastic. They’re a strong contender for this summer’s Bonnaroo, so consider this set a warmup. You can’t go wrong with Monday’s bonus picks either: Disclosure on Fallon, Vampire Weekend on Kimmel, and Glen Hansard on Letterman. Not a bad night to stay in!

Bonus: Disclosure
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
 | NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c
[Live | 1.22.14 | The Tabernacle, Atlanta | Info]

Bonus: Vampire Weekend
Jimmy Kimmel Live! | ABC; 11:35PM/10:35c
[Live | 4.28.14 | Sloss Furnace, Birmingham | Info]

Bonus: Glen Hansard

TUESDAY | 1.21

DON’T MISS: WILD CUB
on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
[NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]

As we told you about previously, Nashville’s own Wild Cub will make their network television debut the same day that their debut full-length, Youth, is set for re/wide release via Mom + Pop. These guys have been netting huge accomplishments left and right lately, and we couldn’t be happier for them! A few artists with upcoming Nashville shows will also grace your TV screen: Young the Giant on Kimmel and Jonathan Wilson on Carson Daly, and Ellie Goulding will appear on Letterman. Another great lineup!

[Live | 3.2.14 | 3rd & Lindsley, Nashville | Info]

Bonus: Young the Giant
Jimmy Kimmel Live! | ABC; 11:35PM/10:35c
[Live | 3.11.14 | The Ryman Auditorium, Nashville | Info]

Bonus: Jonathan Wilson
Last Call with Carson Daly | NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c
[Live | 2.22.14 | Mercy Lounge, Nashville | Info]

WEDNESDAY | 1.22

DON’T MISS: RUN THE JEWELS
on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
[NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]

In what we believe to be their first network television appearance as Run the Jewels, the hip hop supergroup, consisting of El-P and Killer Mike, will bring their killer live show to Fallon. We caught them last year at Exit/In, so trust us when we say this is one of the freshest groups in underground hip hop. Bonus picks include fellow indie rapper Danny Brown on Kimmel, indie rockers Two Door Cinema Club on Carson Daly, and Neon Trees back again this week on Leno. [RUN THE JEWELS CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER]

[Live | 4.24.14-4.27.14 |CounterPoint Festival; Rome, GA | Info]

Bonus: Danny Brown
Jimmy Kimmel Live! | ABC; 11:35PM/10:35c

Bonus: Two Door Cinema Club
Last Call with Carson Daly | NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c

Bonus: Neon Trees
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno | NBC; 11:35PM/10:35c

THURSDAY | 1.23

DON’T MISS: NO AGE
on Late Show with David Letterman
[CBS; 11:35PM/10:35c]

Experimental LA punk duo No Age make their return to Letterman on Thursday, and, if it’s even half as good as their past televised performances, that’s exciting enough to nab our top spot. The group’s latest, An Object, dropped last summer. If that’s not your bag, indie rapper/singer Sirah, who we caught a couple times last year and adore, will be on Carson Daly, folky songstrees Sarah Jarosz will make her network television debut on Conan, and hip hop legacy artist Biz Markie will stop by Aresnio.

Bonus: Sirah

FRIDAY | 1.24

DON’T MISS: SCHOOLBOY Q
on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
[NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]

On this rather bland Friday night, we have exactly one recommendation for you, but at least it’s a killer one: buzzy hip hop up and comer Schoolboy Q will grace the stage at Fallon. Look for him this summer on the festival circuit, and keep an eye (or ear) open for Q’s third album, Oxymoron, due out next month. It’s one of our most-anticipated of the year!

[Live | 4.24.14-4.27.14 |CounterPoint Festival; Rome, GA | Info]

SATURDAY | 1.25

DON’T MISS: BASTILLE
on Saturday Night Live
[NBC; 11:30PM/10:30c]

Didn’t snag Bastille tickets the first or second time they sold out, first at Cannery then at their upgraded location of War Memorial Auditorium? Well, tuning into their SNL performance is a little bit cheaper than StubHub, anyway. They’ll have a tough time toping Drake’s fantastic set last week though!

[Live | 4.28.14 | War Memorial Auditorium, Nashville | Info]
