Diamond Rugs inaugural show at The Earl in Atlanta

I had the pleasure of escaping my family holiday routine in Atlanta Thursday night to see Diamond Rugs inaugural show at The Earl in Atlanta, and let me tell you they did not disappoint.  For those that don’t remember Diamond Rugs from our “Get to Know” post, they are a “supergroup” composed of Deer Tick’s John McCauley & Robbie Crowell, Ian Saint Pé of Black Lips, Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, Hardy Morris from opener Dead Confederate, and Bryan Dufresne who briefly played with Six Finger Satellite.  The result is a mixture of some of the finer aspects from all those bands.  It’s a rock n’ roll smorgasbord of beer drenched songs that were perfect for the dingy confines of the Earl.

After suffering through the opening set by Dead Confederate, Diamond Rugs literally stumbled onto the stage, and the shenanigans began.  Beers were being poured over heads, and McCauley announced that he needed to run in the back to get the set lists… and take a leak.  The crowd was asked by McCauley “why are you guys here, we haven’t even released a record yet?”  Oh, did I say record, yup…  They recorded a record in Nashville recently, and we can expect to see that on April 28th.  The sounds are more reminiscent of Deer Tick with some forays into the other bands, but, by the sound of it, McCauley has written most of the songs on the record.

I am sure that we are going to hear more and more about these guys after the record comes out, but in the meantime you can check out some shaky cell phone snippets from YouTube below.  I’ve also attached the numbered posters commemorating the debut show (please ignore my baby nephew’s blocks).
