We first told you about the upcoming Nashville return for Primus, when they announced their recently released album, The Desaturating Seven. The eclectic rockers are back for their first headlining date since 2015, bringing their intensely entertaining live show to War Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 24, and with the original lineup back together for the first time in decades, this show is sure to be extra special. Tickets are still available starting at $35, but we’re also happy to announce that we’re giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Head below to find out more about the show, and enter for a chance to win.
In typical oddball style, Primus‘s first studio album in six years (assuming you discredit their reimagining of the music of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory three years ago) is, appropriately, based on a children’s book by Ul De Rico, titled The Rainbow Goblins, and features the dark, haunting, proggy, psychedelica that the band are famous for. Perhaps more importantly, bassist and vocalist Les Claypool reassembled the classic lineup of Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums), making this their first album together since 1995’s Tales from the Punchbowl.
Claypool explains the inspiration and timing of the record, as he recounts the inspiration when reading this story to his now-grown children. “The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, ‘this would make good fodder for a piece of music.’ The use of color and darkness, both in the paintings and the writing was compelling, and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”
Goblin Rock is perhaps a fitting genre descriptor for the often hard to peg band of weirdos, and The Desaturating Seven is definitely worth digging into for a completely unique voice in the largely homogenized world of contemporary music. If you have ever seen Primus, or any Claypool’s numerous side projects, then you know that the shows are hard hitting, improv-filled, sonic journeys that are not to be missed.
Tickets are still available here, but, if you are feeling lucky, you can also throw your name in the hat below for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show.
