Celebrated folk-pop group The Head and the Heart are returning to Nashville in support of their celebrated third studio album, Signs of Light. If you missed out on their Ryman appearance last year, you won’t want to miss their stop at Ascend Amphitheater on Sept. 29. This time around, they’re bringing along beloved psychedelic indie rockers Dr. Dog for a one night only appearance. If this sounds like the perfect way to start off a weekend, you’re in luck. Tickets are still available right here, but we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky reader. Keep reading for more info on the show and for your chance to win!
THE HEAD AND THE HEART
Folk pop group The Head and the Heart are known for their sweeping harmonies and wanderlust-inducing lyrics. The Seattle-based outfit formed in 2009, and quickly earned buzz around the city after members started selling copies of their debut LP by hand and in local record shops. Sub Pop signed them and added a recorded version of their concert staple “Rivers and Roads” to the track list. That was a smart move, as that track has become one of their trademark cuts.
That debut led to opening slots for major artists like Death Cab for Cutie and Vampire Weekend. After two years of touring in support of their debut, they released their followup LP Let’s Be Still. It marked the first time the band were able to creatively plot out their project with the support of a label, which allowed them to fine tune their already impressive sound. The record climbed to number 10 on the Billboard charts, cementing them as a major force in the genre.
Last year, their dropped their third studio record, Signs of Light. It had their best first-week debut, landing in the number five spot and earning plenty of critical praise. If you missed out on their second headlining show at The Ryman last October, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy one last outdoor show before the fall chill finally hits Nashville.
DR. DOG
Since their formation in 1999, Dr. Dog have been creating intricate and surprising releases that mix everything from the sugar-sweet pop sound of the 1960s to the lo-fi, grittier sound of ’90s alt-rock. Based in Philadelphia, members Toby Leaman, Scott McMicken, Frank McElroy, Zach Miller, and Eric Slick have earned a dedicated following by experimenting with new sounds, but never straying to far from their scrappy roots. They’ve released ten albums so far, including last year’s surprise LP Abandoned Mansion. If you catch their opening set, you can expect to hear plenty of cuts from that, along with favorites from their 2012 breakout release Be The Void, and more.
