One of our absolute favorite local musicians, and one we’ve been covering since our earliest days, multifaceted hip hop artist Chancellor Warhol released his highly-anticiapted new EP, Until the Light Takes Me, last fall, and seems to be diving headfirst into a busy 2017, teasing more new music and multimedia ventures, and celebrating a prominent national commercial feature. An unparalleled live performer, Warhol will be joined by fellow local rapper Zach Taylor and electronic artists ESCPE and Billy Cave for a hometown performance Jan. 28 at The High Watt. Any opportunity you have to see Chance is well worth it, but with budget-friendly tickets, this show feels practically mandatory. Even better? We’re giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! CHANCELLOR WARHOL

An important fixture in the local music scene, and certainly one of the most influential members of the Nashville hip hop community, Chancellor Warhol has been pushing artistic boundaries, fusing a love of visual art and pop culture, exploring every imaginable medium, and continually blurring genre lines for years. Born Antonio Dewayne Boleyjack, Warhol developed an early affinity for fashion, art, and cinema, and, while he definitely dabbled in music, it wasn’t until winning the Road to Bonnaroo competition in 2011, less than a year after releasing his debut, Japanese Lunchbox, that Chance began pursuing rap full-time. It wasn’t long before he became one of the most celebrated new artists in Nashville, and with several strong subsequent albums and mixtapes (2014’s Paris Is Burning, which we first experienced in a planetarium, still feels like a career-defining moment), most recently last fall’s Until the Light Takes Me EP, Warhol has grown into one of the most interesting rappers in the game, period. Splitting time in LA, Chance has flexed his talent as a director, creative, and visual artist, all of which seems to only boost the scoop of his music, and, most recently, “Elvis,” the track below, was featured prominently in a national Kia commercial, only the latest in a prominent string of placements. Having shared the stage with names like Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper, and appeared at prestigious fests like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, Warhol also brings his visual flair to a live setting, always delivering some of the most polished and compelling performances we’ve ever seen. Needless to say, when a hometown show like this pops up, you’d be crazy to miss it.

ZACH TAYLOR

Like Warhol, local Zach Taylor‘s soulful take on hip hop incorporates abundant electronic influences with a pop-accessible and contemporary flair. With sharp hooks and a penchant for hypnotic production, he should definitely be on your radar if he’s not already.

ESCPE

Another local, artist/producer ESCPE creates sweeping, textured, and impossibly chill electronic music that definitely lines up with the production sensibilities of the rest of this lineup. Notably, he produced single “Prom Tux,” on Warhol’s latest EP.

BILLY CAVE

Producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentlaist Billy Cave hails originally from DC, though seems to at least split his time in Nashville these days. A member of the Broad St. musical collective along with Zach Taylor, Cave was raised on classic rock before falling in love with electronic music, and makes sweeping, experimental and fresh music that’ll definitely appeal to fans of the rest of this bill.
