Following in the footsteps of both Chris Stapleton and Margo Price last season, breakout local alt-country revivalist Sturgill Simpson, whose brilliant third album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth just nabbed a well-deserved and surprise Album of the Year Grammy nomination (as well as one for Best Country Album), has been tapped to appear as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, when the show returns from its holiday break Jan. 14 with host and Star Wars star Felicity Jones. It should go without saying, but Simpson has had one hell of a year, and, like Stapleton and Price, his timeless, personal, and eclectic flavor of country, coupled with his rebellious streak in opposition to the mainstream country industry, has helped him resonate and crossover with an ever-growing audience.
Sturgill’s SNL debut will air Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10:35 p.m. CST, and will undoubtedly make its way online shortly after.
