Returning to Nashville for the first time in over four years, SoCal soul/r&b rocker Nick Waterhouse, who recently released a stellar third album Never Twice, is back in town with his fantastic backing band tonight, Dec. 6 at Mercy Lounge. One of the most compelling figures of the modern soul revival, Nick has managed to weave between full-on retro appeal in the vein of friend and peer Leon Bridges, and attract fans of more eclectic, nostalgic, and rock-leaning songs like friends and frequent tourmates Allah-Las. With each release, Waterhouse’s buzz and prestige only seems to grow, and if you want to see what all of the fuss is about in person, you can still grab tickets right here, and read on for details below!
Though only 30 and a native of Southern California, one listen to breakout singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse, and you might just as easily guess he’s been making music for quite a few extra decades, and that he cut his teeth somewhere like Texas or Tennessee (not to say that the Orange County scene, where he got his start, isn’t robust and commendable in its own right). With a sound inspired by classic and timeless flavors of soul, r&b, and jazz, Nick formed his first band in high school, before relocating solo to San Francisco, and aligning with the city’s vinyl DJ community and soul club scene, where he refined his sound. After attracting the attention of Jonathan Toubin, Matthew Correia, and Rooky Ricardo’s Records owner Richard Vivian, Waterhouse cut his debut single, “Some Place,” in 2010, finding swift underground buzz thanks to the spread of its vinyl release. Met with unexpected acclaim, Nick assembled a band, began playing live, moved back to Los Angeles, and, in 2012, dropped his debut full-length, Time’s All Gone. Swept up in even more praise, the talented young artist has spent the last several years touring the world, appearing at festivals, finding his music in numerous placements, and continuing to hone his sound, in 2014 with sophomore record Holly, and, most recently with his third and best full-length to date, Never Twice, which returns Waterhouse to original collaborator and producer Michael McHugh. A live powerhouse with an ever-growing pedigree, Nick Waterhouse and his talented backing band are doing their part as one of the best, most magnetic acts of the current soul revival, and their long-overdue return to Music City is a show you don’t want to miss!
Nick Waterhouse will perform tonight, Dec. 6 at Mercy Lounge. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $15.
