Never one to take time off, Southern California based multi-instrumentalist and psychedelic garage rock god Ty Segall has recently announced another solo record, set for a Jan. 27 release. This makes the third Ty helmed production in a calendar year, the first last January with backing band The Muggers, and the second over the summer with yet another side project Gøggs, and that’s honestly just the tip of the iceberg with this guy (since 2006, with various bands, and as a solo artist, Ty’s credited with 18 records in all).
Based on the lead single, “Orange Color Queen,” the upcoming self-titled LP is a little less heavy than the stuff Segall’s been putting out with his new projects. The song harkens back to his psych-rock chamber pop solo record Manipulator (2014), which was one of his most well-received albums both critically and commercially. The man has a cult following regardless, but it would appear he’s going for a broader appeal, in lieu of the much heavier metal/noise rock influenced stuff he’d been working on recently, which has a narrower scope (we love it all honestly). Of course, this is just the first song to be released, and being familiar with his work, there’s literally no telling what the rest of the track listing will hold.
