Continuing the wonderful pop trajectory started with 2013’s Heartthrob, Canadian indie pop sister duo Tegan and Sara further expanded their renewed sound with this year’s Love You to Death, and have been slowly celebrating its release by making music videos for each and every track. The long running group have been a favorite of ours since their earliest days, but with their newfound mainstream pop dominance, Tegan and Sara are sounding better than ever. The group only seem to make it to Nashville every few years, which makes their upcoming show, Oct. 24 at Cannery Ballroom, all the more highly-anticipated. Coupled with the fact that one-time Nashvillian Torres is opening up, you’ll definitely want to grab tickets here, or miss out on one of the fall’s best happenings! We’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan, so if you’re feeling lucky, read on for details and enter below!
TEGAN AND SARA
Canadian indie pop identical twin sister duo Tegan and Sara have been actively making music together for over two decades, with eight fantastic full-lengths, most recently this year’s Love You to Death, to their name. The group first found indie acclaim more than 15 years ago, and spent the ’00s steadily rising in recognition, making the major label jump and finding more mainstream success with fifth and sixth albums The Con and Sainthood. Though their roots are in alternative, indie, and even punk, it was 2013’s Heartthrob, which unabashedly embraced the gals’ pop tendencies, that become their biggest breakout success, propelling Tegan and Sara to new commercial heights, landing them tons of radio play, bagging tours with the likes of Katy Perry and Paramore, and increasing their presence on television and at music festivals. A catchy contribution to The Lego Movie soundtrack would even nab the duo an Academy Award nomination soon after, and with their latest, Love You to Death, T&S continue on their earnest pop trajectory, crafting some of the catchiest, most personal songs of their career. Not just fantastic performers, but prominent advocates for the LGBT community, Tegan and Sara are one of the most versatile, talented, and beloved indie groups in modern musical history, and given the several year gap between their Nashville appearances, we encourage you to catch them at every chance!
TORRES
Though she’s been based in Brooklyn for several years, we’ll always think of Mackenzie Scott, the powerful indie rock force who performs as Torres, as an honorary Nashvillian, since Music City is the place where she cut her teeth at the start of what has become an amazing solo run. Torres sprung onto the scene with the release of her self-titled debut album in 2013, burning up the blogosphere and earning a Best Track nod from Pitchfork for her single “Honey.” Further cementing her critical acclaim with last year’s sophomore album Sprinter, Scott has continued to gain momentum with her raw, edgy songwriting style, penning tunes about everything from heartbreak to religion in moody ballads and fast, grungy songs. After touring with big names like Garbage and Sharon Van Etten, the young performer is more polished than ever, and it’s always a welcome homecoming when a former local artist returns as part of a buzzworthy tour such as this!
