TWiN | This Weekend in Nashville | March 25 – 27

Well SXSW is officially over, and that means that the onslaught of touring bands whizzing around the country will keep Nashville very busy this weekend.  We have everything from an insanely stacked hip hop showcase to some of the best songwriters in the country to a pop punk leaning three day throwdown.  There’s more than enough for everyone, so peruse our weekly staff picks in this edition of TWiN, and get out to see some live music this weekend!

FRIDAY

JORDAN DEPAUL
@ Soulshine Pizza Factory | 7pm | FREE | All Ages

Listeners of Lightning 100 have likely been hearing the track “Me + U” from local americana singer-songwriter Jordan DePaul this week.  The love tinged track is a telling sign of the future for DePaul, and you should jump at the chance to catch him for happy hour in the intimate confines of the Soulshine Pizza patio on Friday night for free.  [MH]

HRC (Human Rights Campaign) of Nashville welcomes everyone to 3rd & Lindsley to help celebrate Music City’s LGBTQI community. The awesome organization has gathered an impressive list of female singer-songwriters, featuring the very talented pop singer Lucie Silvas, country performer Shelly Fairchild, indie folkster Garrison Starr, and more! All of them are ready to rock out at this all ages show for a good cause, so join them and feel the positivity. [JR]

PARKER MILLSAP w/ PATRICK SWEANY, KELSEY WATERS

Americana singer-songwriter Parker Millsap is returning for a headlining gig at The Basement East just a few months after opening for Jason Isbell at The Ryman. On Friday, Millsap will take the spotlight to celebrate the release of his highly-anticipated album, The Very Last Day, which has already garnered rave reviews from critics. Local bluesman Patrick Sweany and alt-folk wonder Kelsey Waters will also be joining in on the fun, so get ready for a night of incredible talent and kickass songwriting.  [LL]

LEGENDS OF SOUTHERN HIP HOP ft. JUVENILE, MYSTIKAL, 8 BALL & MJG, TRICK DADDY, BUN B, PROJECT PAT

In terms of star-studded Nashville hip hop super shows, this is about as big as it gets, especially if you’re a fan of the the Dirty South. Legends of Southern Hip Hop is proud to welcome to Music City the original hot boy Juvenile, No Limit Soldier Mystikal, and Memphis Tenneessee rap icons 8 Ball, MJG, and Project Pat. The list goes on, not that any real hip hop fan should need anymore convincing. Be there for easily one of the best shows of the weekend!  [JR]

Returning for a second year, local DIY punk affair More Than Me Fest, hosted formerly at now defunct house venue Exponent Manor, boasts some of the best emo, indie, pop punk and more, with a stacked, three-day lineup of local and touring acts! Anyone plugged into the scene will lose their mind over this bill, but even if you’re not privy to the artists, you’re still sure to discover some incredible underground talent. Day one boasts Free Throw, Sinai Vessel, Secret Stuff, and more! [PO]

LILY AND MADELEINE w/ SHANNON HAYDEN

Indianapolis based sister duo Lily And Madeleine are out in support of their very well received third LP, Keep It Together, which features expert harmonies over lushy textured dream pop.  With all the buzz building around the duo, this is a good opportunity to catch some up and comers in an intimate space like The High Watt.  Cello wizard Shannon Hayden opens things up.  [MH]

COWBOY MOUTH w/ HOT ACTION COP
@ Exit/In | 9pm | $15-17 | 18+

New Orleans based rockers Cowboy Mouth return to Nashville on Friday night with a sure fire powerhouse set at Exit/In.  Though they have weathered a few lineup changes over the years, these guys have been a staple in the NOLA scene and beyond since the ’90s, and you’ll immediately recognize tracks like “Jenny Says” from the first riff.  Long time local alt rockers Hot Action Cop kick off a throwback night of solid rock jams. [MH]

SKINNY LISTER w/ BEANS ON TOAST, WILL VARLEY
@ The Basement | 9pm | $10-12 | 21+

Hailing from the UK, Skinny Lister play an earnest, punk-infused flavor of folk. Formed in ’09, the band exploded onto the scene with a strong debut in 2012, Forge & Flagon, and returned with a stellar followup, Down on Deptford Broadway, last year. Their live show is lively, full of energy, and infectiously fun, and for the low ticket price, you’d be hard pressed to find more bang for your buck all weekend. [PO]

KANSAS BIBLE COMPANY, DOWNRIGHT
@ Acme Feed & Seed | 10:45pm | FREE | 21+

We’ve been watching funk/jam/big band rockers Kansas Bible Company for a long time now, and we couldn’t be more stoked to see them get bigger and bigger, amassing a local following and touring all over the U.S. Now they are poised to self-release their new record, Paper Moon, on June 3, but first they’ll be rocking out hard into the wee hours of the morning at Acme. This FREE show starts just before 11 p.m. and is supposed to go until 2 a.m., so be ready to party friends. Look for Alabama new wave psych rockers Downright to kick things off. [JR]

CREASE READER, THE INSCAPE, THE NIGHT SHIFT, THE MODERN ROYALS
@ Betty’s Grill | 8pm | $5 suggested donation | 21+

Just this past weekend, we got a chance to check out Crease Reader at The East Room, fresh off a short tour with Lasso Spells and The Jag. We were super impressed with this psychedelic indie band, and are excited to get another chance to see them play so soon, this time on the opposite end of town at Betty’s Grill.  Blog faves The Inscape join The Night Shift and The Modern Royals for a night that should be dripping in groovy rock. [MW]

SATURDAY

SAM OUTLAW w/ WHITNEY ROSE
@ The High Watt | 9pm | $10-12 | 18+

So-Cal country singer Sam Outlaw provided one of the best debut albums of the year in 2015 with Angeleno. The record features a charming mixture of honest, biographical lyrics with a uniquely West Coast Sound that includes mariachi bands and references to Outlaw’s beloved Los Angeles. Modern outlaw country songstress Whitney Rose will also take the stage to sing some cuts from her feisty and impressive album, Heartbreaker of the Year. If you’re looking for country that switches out cliches and sexist stereotypes for old-fashioned storytelling, make sure you’re at The High Watt this Saturday. [LL]

BLACKFOOT GYPSIES, THE YAWPERS, ELECTRIC CITIZEN

The electrifying and ever more popular Blackfoot Gypsies are back home in Nashville for a weekend, and eager melt skulls for only a ten-spot at The Basement. No strangers to No Country coverage (read this post or this post), word is the Gypsies are embarking on a Euro Tour in may, so catch them in the Tennessee while you still can! Americana punk rockers The Yawpers, and hard rockers Electric Citizen are playing in support, so be there on time to make the most of this eclectic bill. [JR]

THE BOOM BAP 8th ANNIVERSARY ft. RATE, BOWLS, CASE BLOOM, SPECIAL GUEST 9TH WONDER

It’s amazing to think that The Boom Bap has been bringing some of the best dance parties to Nashville for 8 years now.  Due to ever growing demand, the event has moved from the The 5 Spot to The Basement East to allow even more folks to show out for the usual Boom Bap madness.  This anniversary party gets an extra kick from producer 9th Wonder.  If you are looking to dance, look no further. [MH]

COOLIO w/ CLASSIC WILLIAMS
@ 12th & Porter | 9pm | $18-20 | 18+

If we really need to explain who Coolio is, then maybe this isn’t the show for you. The famed rapper had a HUGE run in the ’90s, and has continued to make music since, best known for his Grammy Award winning, multi-platinum effort Gangsta’s Paradise. More recently, Coolio has dabbled in culinary arts, and has used his celebrity to become something of a television personality. Local MC Classic Williams will open what’s sure to be a nostalgic, fun affair. [PO]

Day two kicks off early and the afternoon, and is absolutely chock-full of talent, headed up by Donovan Wolfington, Everyone Leaves, a special reunion from locals Rachel, and so many more! [PO]

Arguably the most famous member of famed, long-running boyband the Backstreet Boys, singer Nick Carter have been doubling down on his solo efforts in recent years, during breaks in BSB’s intermittent touring activities. His latest effort, All American, takes a softer, poppier, more personal bent, but don’t worry, despite this show being all about Carter’s solo career, a quick scan of the set shows plenty of songs from the band that made him famous as well. Nick’s earlier show is sold out, but if you move quick, you can still snag tickets to the late night set. [PO]

LORETTA LYNN, PARKER MILLSAP, COLE SWINDELL, AND MORE

It’s not every day that you get to see Loretta Lynn, one of country music’s biggest legends, take the stage at the Grand Ole Opry. She’ll appear just one week after the release of Full Circle, her first album since 2004’s Van Lear Rose, her award-winning collaboration with Jack White. If you didn’t make it to his headlining show at the Basement East on Friday, you’ll also be able to catch a short set from Americana favorite Parker Millsap. Mainstream country chart-toppers Cole Swindell, Love and Theft and Ashley Campbell (daughter of beloved rhinestone cowboy Glen Campbell) will also stop by, so grab a ticket while you still can.  [LL]

TOWER DEFENSE, VAMPTONES, HANS CONDOR
@ The 5 Spot | 9pm | $5 | 21+

We try not to ever miss a chance to see Hans Condor. With stage antics aplenty, we’d dare say they’re one of the best live acts in town right now. But this weekend we’re even more excited than normal to see them because they’re playing with excellent Murfreesboro-based, surf, horror punk band Vamptones and Tower Defense, who will be releasing their new 5 song EP, Stay Inside. [MW]

POLY RECORD RELEASE w/ HOT CLUB TIME MACHINE
@ Club Roar | 8pm | $10-15 | 18+

Local retro pop trio Poly are back after three years with the release of their full length record, Let’s Have An Adventure, which drops on Saturday.  You can have a listen to the first single, “Fishin'” below, and make plans to head to Club Roar for a live performance of the full album, cat-inspired art show, and a set from Hot Club Time Machine.  The event costs $10, but you can snag a vinyl if you can part with $5 more.  Additional details are available at the Facebook event page. [MH]

Eternal Visions is presenting a special showcase inspired by the community of creative women to artistically share and inspire one another.  The music acts include local pop inspired songwriter Xanthi, electro R&B outfit Soft Bodies, electro duo HR_Lexy, chilled out, dreamy electro rock outfit Yumi & The System, and the Lindsay Johns (formerly of Nudity) fronted electro pop project Pangs.  An art show from local female artists will also be presented. Great bands and a cool premise? Bravo, Eternal Visions.  [MH]

THE RECORD COMPANY w/ SHELLY COLVIN

Buzz has been growing like crazy for LA based rockers The Record Company, and, if you somehow have missed the hub bub, fix that immediately.  It’s a mix of throwback rock which nods to Morphine or Coverdale Page, if we were to attempt to make comparisons.  Have a listen to the single “Off The Ground” below to start making your own analogies, and don’t miss your chance to catch them in a club before they explode on the festival scene this summer.  Local songstress Shelly Colvin opens in support of her incredible recent release, LONGSHOT.  [MH]

SAM PALLADIO w/ THE SHIRES

We already gave you the rundown on this show in detail right here, but the short version is Sam Palladio, though best known for playing Gunnar on ABC’s Nashville, is mounting an exciting, solo run, with personal, folk-rock tunes that certainly share some similarities to his TV alter-ego, but ultimately take a unique, broader turn. This mark’s Palladio’s largest local headliner to date, and fellow Brits The Shires have been tapped to support! [PO]

SUPERSUCKERS, JESSE DAYTON

Seattle’s Supersuckers are taking on The Basement East this Easter Sunday. They bring a punk spin to country and serve up an in-your-face performance, just the kind of rock that fits into the Nashville scene. These touring veterans have been making music since the early ’90s, and released their latest album at the end of 2015. Opening for these rockers is Jesse Dayton, a straight from Austin, Texas old school rockabilly rocker with a country flare. This is a perfect show for those without Easter plans or those looking for a little chaos to cap off the weekend, as you can hear in the song below. [OL]
