It’s no secret that the local pop and indie scenes are absolutely thriving right now, and a whole host of exciting artists seem poised to explode in a major way. Among them, and representing different facets of what makes Music City so great, are ambient, alt pop rocker Trenton and indie group Phin, both of whom will be teaming up tonight, Feb. 17 to perform at The Basement East. We’ve sung both of these artists’ praises before, and 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting and transformative year for these two acts. Catch them while they’re still local, and for a low price no less! (Note: electro-pop songstress EZA was originally slated to perform as well, but unfortunately had to cancel.)
TRENTON
A veteran of our Acme showcase series, Florida transplant Trenton, the live moniker of gifted performer and songwriter Ryan Courtney, ambitiously takes cues from acts like Radiohead and Sunny Day Real Estate. With three strong releases to his name, the latest, last year’s Ghost Runner EP helmed by Grammy award wining producer Joshua D Niles, Trenton’s moody, ambient, alt pop style lends itself perfectly to crossover appeal, and has already found its way into high-profile television placement. Combining earnest lyrics with synthy, cinematic arrangements, Trenton has managed to both find a prominent place in Nashville pop landscape, and firmly stake out a sound and direction all his own. Perhaps one of Music City’s best-kept secrets, Trenton won’t stay secret for long.
PHIN
Soon after forming as students in 2013, local indie rockers Phin were met with almost immediate praise, propelled to local fame by their impressive debut EP, Those Killers. Fronted by singer-songwriter Toby Haydel, the sextet’s pop accessible, indie rooted sound helped them win Lightning 100’s Music City Mayhem in 2014, nabbing them a spot at Live on the Green. 2014 gave way to 2015, and, aside from a show here and there, the band seemed to slow down a bit, apparently making some life changes in order to focus on music full-time. While last year brought a new single, the deliciously poppy, synth-laced, and hypnotic banger “The Pieces,” a followup to Those Killers has been long in the works, and should finally arrive in the near future. Still one of Nashville’s most exciting up and coming acts, we look forward to what is shaping up to be a huge 2016 for Phin!
Trenton, and Phin will perform tonight, Feb. 17 at The Basement East. The show is 21+, begins at 9 p.m. (doors at 8:30 p.m.), and tickets are available for $5.
