Death Grips, the self-described “conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision,” have announced an Oct. 2 show at Marathon Music Works. For some fans, this might seem mildly surprising, considering that the Sacramento-based experimental/industrial hip hop group announced their official disbandment just over a year ago. Refusing to stay dead, however, Death Grips still managed to release their already completed fourth album, The Powers That B, in two parts, over 2014 and 2015. In January, a surprise instrumental album, Fashion Week, also dropped, fueling speculation that the band, known for trolling their fans, labels, and, perhaps, themselves, might not really be done. Following several months of teases and viral marketing, the trio announced their first string of North American “reunion” dates back in March, and hinted at the fact that new music might be in the cards. These shows have already begun happening, and not only are the band are showing up (for awhile, they had a habit of no-shows), but they’re bringing it hard, as they did at one of our favorite Bonnaroo sets ever a few years back. Though anchored in hip hop, Death Grips’ sound harbors more of a kinship to legitimate punk than anything else, and their bombastic style, unpredictable attitude, socially and politically charged ideology, and intense live shows make them one of the best, most unique groups making music today. Grab your tickets when they go on sale this Friday, July 10 at 10 a.m. right here, or risk missing what might be the best (or at least most memorable) show of the year.
