Following something of an unexpended reunion late last year, indie punk trio Sleater-Kinney announced their first album in a decade, No Cities to Love (which dropped in January to rave reviews), and their first tour in nearly as long, which will stop tonight, April 23 at Marathon Music Works! More recently, labelmates THEESatisfaction were added to the lineup, and tickets are still on sale here – though they’re nearly gone! Grab yours now to reserve your spot, and read on for a preview of the show.
SLEATER-KINNEY
Even if you weren’t a Sleater-Kinney fan during their first run, which lasted from 1994-2006, odds are you’ve heard tunes from the Washington rockers lately. Between their star-studded viral music video for “No Cities to Love” (which was partially filmed here in Nashville), their Bob’s Burgers collaboration for “A New Wave,” television and podcast appearances, national press coverage, and, not to mention, guitarist Carrie Brownstein’s popular sketch comedy series, Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney have seemingly been everywhere since their triumphant return last fall. Drawing heavy influence from their northwest upbringing, Sleater-Kinney channel punk and indie rock sensibilities with smart and idealistic lyrics, settling into a broader rock and more mainstream accessible aesthetic towards the later releases of their eight album run. They’re practically indie rock royalty at this point, and they boast an incredible live show to boot. This will be the ladies’ first Nashville show in a long, long time, and it could be just as long until they return; don’t miss it.
THEESATISFACTION
Signed to Sleater-Kinney’s longtime label home Sub Pop, THEESatisfaction first shot to recognition after guesting on a song by Shabazz Palaces in 2011. Since then, they’ve released two full-lengths; the most recent, EarthEE, just last month. A stark stylistic contrast to S-K, their unique and original sound combines hip hop, r&b, soul, and electronic elements, and the duo’s live show is as just as hypnotic and unforgettable.
Sleater-Kinney and THEESatisfaction will perform tonight, April 23 at Marathon Music Works. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $25-28.
