Yonder Mountain String Band kicked off their Winter Tour 2015 in Raleigh, NC earlier this week and will be at Cannery Ballroom tonight at 8PM. We told you about this show back in November when tickets first went on sale and, amazingly, some tickets are still available for just $25. Philip Phillips was listed as the opener at that time but has been replaced by the American indie folk band, Horse Feathers. We understand that YMSB’s last visit to the Cannery ranks as one of longest shows the band has ever played….over four hours. No promises for this Friday’s show but who knows what might happen?
YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND
With a traditional lineup of instruments, Yonder Mountain String Band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance, but the members have created their own music that transcends any genre. The band’s special guests, Jake Joliff and Allie Kral, are scheduled to join the band for this show. Jolliff is an award-winning mandolin player and founding member of the disbanded Americana band “Joy Kills Sorrow.” Kral is well-known as the former fiddle player for “Cornmeal” and has performed with Railroad Earth, Warren Haynes and others. Check out YMSB playing “Sideshow Blues” at the 2014 Northwest String Summit at Horning’s Hideout.
HORSE FEATHERS
After fronting several rock bands in his native Idaho, singer/songwriter Justin Ringle moved to Portland, Oregon in 2004 and began focusing on acoustic music under the moniker Horse Feathers. In 2005, he was joined by multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick and the duo recorded their debut album, Words Are Dead, in 2006. Peter’s sister, Heather, joined the group on cello later that year. A second album, House With No Home, was released in 2008. Peter left the group around that time as did Heather several months later. Thistled Spring was released in April 2010 and Cynic’s New Year in 2012. In October 2014, NPR debuted Horse Feathers’ fifth album entitled So It Is With Us. The current line-up consists of Ringle (Guitar / Vocals), Nathan Crockett (Violin / Mandolin / Saw), Dustin Dybvig (Drums / Piano), Brad Parsons (Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin and Vocals) and Mayhaw Hoons (Bass). Check out Horse Feathers performing at Oregon Public Broadcasting in October.
Yonder Mountain String Band with Horse Feathers will perform on Friday, January 23rd at Cannery Ballroom. The show is 18+, begins at at 8PM (doors at 7PM), and tickets are available for $25.
