The 5 Spot is known as the spot to see live music on the east side, so much so that it’s been featured on Nashville, and people can be heard grumbling about how it’s not cool anymore. While almost any night of the week is a good time to stop in, this Wednesday the venue has a particularly special evening planned with music from some of Nashville’s best up-and-coming rock and roll solo acts; Southern singer-songwriter and guitar picker William Tyler, Diarrhea Planet co-founder Evan P. Donohue, and folk synth pop singer Tristen. Tickets will be $10 at the door; click through to learn more about the lineup.
Tristen
Folky synth pop singer Tristen has gotten raves from the local and national press for her latest album C A V E S, which has been compared to Jenny Lewis and Neko Case with a helping of traditional country. She opened for Television here back in the spring, where we caught her performing all by herself, sans a backing band. “Not only did this serve as a refreshing, stripped down change of pace, but also a reminder of Tristen’s true gift for songwriting,” we said at the time. It’s uncertain if she’ll roll solo again at The 5 Spot, but given how small the venue is it seems like a possibility.
William Tyler
William Tyler is a singer-songwriter influenced by early rock and roll and the South. He released an EP this spring, Lost Colony, after last year’s acclaimed full-length Impossible Truth. Tyler was born and raised here in Nashville, a real Southerner in a city full of northern transplants, and that authenticity comes through in his singing, songwriting, and guitar playing, which he honed as a member of Lambchop and Silver Jews.
Evan P. Donohue
A founding member of Nashville’s beloved punk band Diarrhea Planet, Evan P. Donohue‘s has moved on to pursue his less punk and more chamber pop (á la Beck and Elvis Costello) solo project . He’s been a staple in the local rock scene for a few years now, and we believe it’s just a matter of time before he builds the same level of attention for himself as DPs did this past year.
Tristen, William Tyler, and Evan P. Donohue will perform Wednesday, December 17 at The 5 Spot. The show is 21+, begins at at 8 p.m., and tickets are available for $10 at the door.
