LEARN
Today’s Bonnaroo Band of the Day actually comes to us from the nearby city of Memphis and goes by the name of Valerie June. If you’ve ever listened to June’s music, her hometown probably isn’t too much a surprise to you. After all, June is one of the preeminent voices of modern day Appalachian blues and gospel. The 32 year old performer is not remotely afraid to inject a little bit of that Southern mentality into classic soul/folk vibes, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. She calls this organic moonshine roots music, which, to be honest, is actually quite an accurate description.
Even if you’ve never heard of Valerie June, you’ve undoubtedly heard of some of her collaborators; she’s worked with the likes of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, Jake Bugg, and Old Crow Medicine Show. With talent like that backing her abilities, and dozens of very unique and captivating tunes, it’s pretty easy to see why June would be selected to play this year’s Bonnaroo. While she hasn’t played at Bonnaroo before, the sunny disposition and twang she brings to the table will fit perfectly on one of the mid-sized stages during a hot afternoon.
