Finally starting to feel like fall, and the fall tour schedules are more packed than ever with touring bands and locals alike. We’ve already told you about an artsy record release party for Kim Logan tonight, a never before seen supergroup with six shows on Saturday, a major act with the lead singer from a former major act, and that’s just getting this started. Have a look below for our rundown of everything that is happening This Weekend in Nashville!
FRIDAY
SETH WOOD
@ Soulshine Pizza | 7pm | FREE | All Ages
I recently met singer-songwriter Seth Wood at a 4th of July party, where we played a few fantastic tunes. It’s exciting to see such a talent selected as Lightning 100’s Artist of the Week, and I encourage all of you to give Seth a listen, below and to go check out the show![PO]
RUBY AMANFU W/ MATT MAHAFFEY AND THOM DONOVAN
@ 12th & Porter | 7pm (doors at 6pm) | $15 | 18+
Ruby Amanfu might have gotten her biggest commercial boost by performing alongside Jack White in his recent solo record, but that is not why you should go to this show. Amanfu is so much more than background vocals. The local talent just released a 7-inch including the single “Love Out Loud” which you can get a taste of here, and you can check out “Love Interruption” with Jack White below. Support includes Matt Mahaffey of such fame as Self, Beck, Pink, and a jillion more; and Thom Donovan who is a prolific musician and actor on Nashville. Seriously, any of these three would be an incredible bill, but you get all of it for only $15. [MH]
STEELISM AND ANDREW COMBS
@ The Basement | 9pm | $10 | 21+
We’ve raved about blues, country-tinged instrumental rockers Steelism and prolific singer-songwriter Andrew Combs countless times in the past. If putting them together sounds like a match made in heaven, you’re in luck: this show is to celebrate the release of a split 7″, and the first 100 people in attendance will receive a copy! [PO]
THE RATZ W/ BLOODDRIVE
@ The End | 9pm | $5 | 18+
One of Nashville’s original local post-punk bands, The Ratz are back and crawling out from a basement near you. Catch them at The End with special guests, the equally putrid members of Blooddrive. [JR]
LANGHORNE SLIM & THE LAW W/ JONNY FRITZ
@ Mercy Lounge | 9pm | $15 | 18+
Say you like folk music, but you don’t want to spend your Friday night drowning your sorrows in whiskey and reminiscing about the one that got away. That’s a tough predicament, but luckily for you, bands like Langhorne Slim & The Law exist. Their sound has that organic, raw edge to it that makes folk so cool, but they harness that into a catchy, upbeat sound. You don’t have to take our word for it though, cause there’s a video right here to prove it to you. [JS]
BETWEEN THE BURIED & ME W/ THE FACELESS AND THE CONTORTIONIST
@ The Cannery Ballroom | 7pm (doors at 7pm) | $17ADV/$20DOS | 18+
If you love progressive metal rockers Between the Buried and Me, then get ready! They will be performing this weekend at The Cannery Ballroom in support of their latest release, The Parallax II: Future Sequence. Joining them will be Los Angeles death metal band The Faceless and Indiana-based progressive metal artists The Contortionist. This show is going to be killer, so don’t miss out! [KA]
SIMO
@ The Family Wash | 10pm | Free? | All Ages
We stumbled upon SIMO at Bonnaroo this year, and we were totally blown away by the talented guitar-fronted band! We weren’t the only ones to notice either. They’ve been getting airplay on Lightning 100, and this is, surprisingly, one of their sparse local shows. I’m wondering how The Wash can handle the power of this music. Why don’t you join me there to find out! [MH]
SATURDAY
MUSICIANS CORNER: THE VESPERS w/ GABRIEL KELLY AND ANDERSON EAST
@ Cenntenial Park | 12pm | FREE | All Ages
Grab a blanket and head down to Centennial Park for the Musicians Corner Fall closer show. Pre-show festivities start at noon, and music starts at 1:30pm, so grab your sweetie and head over to West End to hear some great local musicians, including folk foursome The Vespers, Gabriel Kelly, & soulful singer/songwriter Anderson East. [LS]
J RODDY WALSTON & THE BUSINESS
@ Grimey’s | 5pm | FREE | All Ages
@ Exit/In | 8pm | $15 | 18+ (w/ The Wans & Reignwolf)
I’ve found some of my favorite new bands by listening to Lightning 100, and J Roddy Walston & the Business are no exception. Walston is not only a spirited piano player, but is a rock n’ roller with exceptional talent as a songwriter. After the Grimeys set, they team up with local rockers The Wans, who are working on their next record, open up the show, so get there on time! Oh, and speaking of bands with great guitar tone, definitely make sure to see Jordan Cook aka (Reignwolf). Holy smokes, Batman! [LS]
TAKING BACK SUNDAY (w/ guest vocalist SPENCER CHAMBERLAIN of UNDEROATH)
w/ POLAR BEAR CLUB, TRANSIT
@ Marathon Music Works |8pm | $23ADV/$25DOS | 18+
We told you earlier this month that emo/post-hardcore superstars Taking Back Sunday would be performing at Marathon Music Works on Saturday. That statement is still true, except for one significant change: vocalist Adam Lazarra will not be present. With ex-Underoath frontman Spencer Chamberlain stepping in, this show is sure to be one to remember. Taking Back Sunday will be supported by upstate New York post-hardcore band Polar Bear Club as well as pop punk powerhouse Transit. Don’t miss this! [KA]
MONSTER BLOCK PARTY: STEVE AOKI W/ WAKA FLOCKA FLAME AND BORGORE
@ 12th & Porter/Anthem | 6pm | $36-$100 | 18+
You know when you read about an upcoming event, and it just boggles your mind that this is even happening? That was this event for us. EDM legend Steve Aoki will be headlining the Monster Block Party, and there is little doubt in anyone’s minds that his set will be just as spectacular as it usually is. However, many fans will be equally excited to see Israeli electronic artist Borgore collaborate with certified gangster Waka Flocka Flame. This interesting trio is probably a result of previous collaborations between these artists, which you can hear them talk about in the video below. [JS]
SALVADOR DALI PARTON ft. members of Apache Relay, JEFF the Brotherhood, Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and The Vaccines
The High Watt | 6:45pm | FREE | 18+
Exit/In | 8pm | for J. Roddy ticket holders | 18+
The Stone Fox | 9pm | for Grooms ticket holders | 18+
Springwater | 9:45pm | for ticket holders
Coyote Ranch | 11pm
TBA location | late night
We already did a full preview post for this one, and compared it to a similar super-group performance that we saw last year by the one-and-done Anal Beatles. Given the addition of members of JEFF & The Vaccines to this group, I wouldn’t expect anything less than a punk-slaying spectacle that you will probably see regardless of which venue you visit on Saturday. Someone’s horrible cell phone footage of the Anal Beatles is below to give you a taste of what you might expect. [MH]
BASEMENT HALLOWEEN: KYLE ANDREWS, DANIEL ELLSWORTH & THE GREAT LAKES, AND KINK ADOR
@ The Basement | 9pm | $7 | 21+
Combining (recent SXSW selection) Kyle Andrews with some of our local faves, Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes and Kink Ador is a brilliant bill. I’m not sure how scary all this incredible pop music is going to be, but who says Halloween is really that scary anyway. The only scare you might have is getting their late to see that it is sold out. [MH]
LARRY AND HIS FLASK W/ ONWARD AND ETC
@ The End | 8pm | $10 | 18+
Filling the same bluegrass and folk inspired hole as acts like Frank Turner, and even channeling elements of ska and broader musical influences, Oregon natives Larry and His Flask have a raw, emotionally charged, and eclectic style that is unrivaled. Their live show is as energetic and turbo charged as their music, and their latest album, By the Lamplight, is one of the year’s best! [PO]
GROOMS W/ JASMIN KASET AND SALVADOR DALI PARTON
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $7 | 18+
Buzzy, Brooklyn noise act Grooms are a complex, pleasant mix of pop, post-punk, indie, and ethereal, experimental rock. They’re the type of band we absolutely love The Stone Fox for booking, and, with the added bonus of local Jasmin Kaset and supergroup Salvador Doli Parton, this is a pretty killer deal for a mere 7 bones. [PO]
RREST w/ GOLD ROOM, SPIRITS & THE MELCHIZEDEK CHILDREN
@ FooBar | 9pm | $5 | 21+
Lo-fi Atlanta rockers Rrest are someone we have been crushing on a bit lately. The drug inducing haze that they create is similar to listening to Kurt Vile cover Ariel Pink backwards on acid (that means it’s really good). Give in to the smoke at FooBar… you never know, it may actually make you enjoy the show more. [MH]
SUNDAY
TITUS ANDRONICUS W/ PLASTIC VISIONS & T.RUST
@ The End | 9pm | $10 | All Ages
You can always count on The End to put on a great rock show. Local favs Plastic Visions & Boro rockers T. Rust return as support for Ptichfork-darlings Titus Andronicus, (who seriously worship The Replacements, which we can respect). [LS]
SHAI HULUD W/ FACE ALL FEARS, DEAFKID, RIVERA
@ Cafe Coco | 7pm | $10 | All Ages
The last time hardcore pioneers Shai Hulud came to town, we took an in-depth look at why the group is so relevant and important to their scene. Everything we said before still holds true, so head here to find out a lot more about them. The real reason to check out this show though? It’s in Cafe Coco of all places. Get ready to go nuts. [PO]
THE BOXER REBELLION W/ THE YOUNG INTERNATIONAL
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm (doors at 6pm) | $12 | All Ages
London (partially by way of Tennessee) indie rockers The Boxer Rebellion have seen a ton of success and recognition of their past near decade of releases and touring. Though the buzz might have died down a bit, their latest release, Promises, might just be their strongest yet. Paired with local (and perfectly stylistically matched, now that we think about it) indie rockers The Young International, this could be the Sunday show to beat. [PO]
COLLEEN GREEN W/ WHITE FANG AND BREAST MASSAGE
@ The Basement | 8pm | $5 | 21+
Hardly Art recording artist, Colleen Green channels the Ramones in some tracks and sounds like bedroom made indie pop in others. Old-school California punk rockers White Fang are sure to be a hit for many, while local rockers Breast Massage continue to be a hit for more than just their music over here as well. [MH]
LITTLE COMETS W/ BLACKFOOT CIRCLE
@ The High Watt | 8pm (7pm doors) | $10ADV/$12DOS | 18+
Bringing there English brand of everything-including-the-kitchen-sink style indie rock to The High Watt, Little Comets hope you hop on board for the ride. Fellow countrymen Blackfoot Circle bring a more melodic, guitar heavy alternative flavor. Add salt to taste. [JR]
[JS] Jack Smith
[JR] Jacob Ryan
[JM] Jessika Malone
[KA] Kelsi Alexander
[LS] Lauren Strange
