Formed in 2009 in Athens, Alabama (though their friendship and musical kinship extends several years farther back), acclaimed blues and southern rock outfit Alabama Shakes spent their early years generating buzz around the region, and self-funding what would become their first album, Boys & Girls, with producer Andrija Tokic and his Nashville studio The Bomb Shelter. That recording process took place in 2011, the same year that the group began attracting wider buzz, and were eventually signed to ATO Records (also changing their name to Alabama Shakes from original name The Shakes), ahead of the record’s release in early 2012. The rest is history, as the band’s debut absolutely catapulted them to stardom, earning universal acclaim, landing tours with the likes of Jack White and Drive-By Truckers, appearing at fests like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, scoring multiple Grammy nominations, and achieving something of a generational hit single with early breakout “Hold On.” Sophomore album Sound & Color would follow in 2015, again met with critical accolades and earning the band multiple major awards, including three Grammys, and several major singles, as the Shakes continued to tour the world, become a major festival staple, and cement their reputation as one of the best, most celebrated acts of the 2010s.
In something of a surprise, Alabama Shakes went on hiatus in 2018, after just a few whirlwind years of fame, and have been active with other projects since (frontwoman and Nashville transplant Brittany Howard has been especially prolific both during and since her time with the Shakes, forming projects like Thunderbitch, Bermuda Triangle, and recent hardcore project Kumite, as well as kicking off a lauded solo career in 2019 with debut LP Jaime, followed last year by What Now). Still on good terms (aside from original drummer Steve Johnson, who was convicted of domestic violence during the hiatus and is no longer affiliated with the band) and still regular collaborators, it always seemed like a matter of when, not if, Alabama Shakes would return, and it finally happened back in December, with bassist Zac Cockrell and guitarist Heath Fogg joining Howard for a surprise performance in Tuscaloosa. Shortly after, they teased new music and announced a full-on reunion tour, which brings the modern icons back to Nashville July 25 at Ascend Amphitheater, for their first Music City appearance in nine years. Folk singer-songwriter Caleb Elliott and local R&B and soul favorites Alanna Royale have been tapped to open, and tickets are still available right here while they last. However, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan- preview the lineup and enter below!
