New show listings – Childish Gambino and Raconteurs

Two new Nashville shows were just announced.  Childish Gambino will bring his intelligent, underground hip-hop to the Cannery Ballroom on October 6th (tickets on sale Friday 8/5 at 10am), and Jack White’s Raconteurs will play The Ryman on September 15th (tickets on sale Friday 8/5 at Noon).  You know the Raconteurs, and there is not a new album (that’s been announced yet) to discuss here…. but, it’s The Ryman, so it’ll sound bad ass.

So, I am going to focus my attention on Childish Gambino which is the hip-hop project of rapper, actor, tv writer, comedian Donald Glover.  Glover currently plays the role of Troy Barnes on the NBC comedy, Community (and there was a big Twitter campaign for him to be the next Spiderman); was a writer for The Daily Show and 30 Rock; and performed stand up on Comedy Central and worked with sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy.  It could just be that Glover has found his, already renaissance man, niche as rapper Childish Gambino.  Glover reports that the name, Childish Gambino, is from a Wu-Tang name generator website (which checks out, mine is the not-nearly-as-cool, “Top-Heavy Hookjaw”).  He has been self recording, producing, and releasing records and “mixtapes” seriously since 2008.  In March 2011, he released an EP, named EP, and is set to release a full length LP, Camp, in September 2011.  I’ve included some tracks off of EP below (as with most Hip-Hop, it’s probably best to use headphones in the cubicle).

He performed at Bonnaroo (both comedy as Donald and music as Childish Gambino).  He has been out with the Rock The Bells tour, and he is on his IAMDONALD tour right now that has been selling out cities across the country.  You get your opportunity to see the show that is Childish Gambino/Donald Glover at the Cannery Ballroom on October 6th.  Tickets go on sale Friday at 10am.  If you need something to do on Friday morning while you are waiting for 10am to roll around, YouTube up some absolutely inappropriate and funny videos from his Derrick Comedy days.
