What started in 2007 as an annual celebration of all things vinyl, marked largely by niche indie releases and celebrating independent stores, Record Store Day has ballooned over the years to become a cultural phenomenon, now bringing a massive number of new, collectible, and limited-edition releases and reissues from artists small and large, and prompting tons of festivities at independent record stores across the nation. This year’s installment takes places this Saturday, April 12, and, being the music-obsessed city that we are, Nashville historically goes all out for Record Store Day, with events planned at virtually every independent shop in town (even the ones that don’t stock RSD exclusives). To help you keep track, we’ve put together this annual guide, detailing all the stores, sales, performances, events, and releases you should be privy to in order to help navigate Record Store Day, as well as some other cool, unaffiliated musical happenings, if you’d like to make a whole day of it.
As we’ve felt compelled to mention the last few years, this holiday has felt a bit more bittersweet both post-pandemic and in the face of Nashville’s immense growth, as there’s a noticeable drop in shops from just a few years ago. Fond Object, The Vinyl Bunker, and Atomic all shuttered awhile back, and more recently we lost Boulevard Records, New Life Record Shop, Madison’s CD Warehouse, and downtown institution Ernest Tubb Record Shop (though, on one brighter note, we’ve gained a few new shops in the last couple of years as well, which you’ll see below). We hope that serves as a sobering reminder that even in a musical city such as this, at a time when vinyl is seeing a massive resurgence, local record stores are still small businesses, and in a town becoming increasingly more expensive and inaccessible to navigate, it’s more important than ever to support them as much as you can, all year long, even after the RSD fun ends.
Read on for the full Record Store Day rundown, and start planning your day!
Famed local record store Grimey’s has been an essential Record Store Day destination since the holiday began. While their East Nashville location (which opened in late 2018) doesn’t quite have the outdoor space for the grand courtyard celebrations the old 8th Ave shop did back in the day, Grimey’s has been fine-tuning their RSD shopping setup since the pandemic, and has remained the go-to spot for vinyl diehards.
WHERE: 1060 East Trinity Lane; RSD exclusives are typically available in the rear entrance, across from Anaconda Vintage. Parking is limited.
WHEN: The shop opens at 10 a.m., but expect eager patrons to line up much earlier, even overnight. Grimey is typically very organized about marking where to form a line.
WHO: Just one band is on the bill this year: Replacements tribute group The Hip Replacements, who’ll be playing songs from ‘Mats classic Tim, which is one of this year’s RSD Exclusive releases. Music kicks off at 4:30 p.m., with free beer for those over 21.
WHAT: Expect a really comprehensive selection of Record Store Day exclusives and a lot of inventory. In addition, food from Daddy’s Dogs and free cookies from Hi-Fi (for those who arrive early enough), voter registration from HeadCount, a chance to win free Marshall headphones and speakers, some killer concert ticket giveaways, and more.
WHY: Though other shops in town have certainly upped their game and might be a tad less crowded while featuring more activities this year, Grimey’s is still arguably the city’s most famous record store, and in our experience has the largest selection of releases available.
The Groove is another East Nashville fixture, and has really upped their Record Store Day game over the years with lots of live music, vendors, and a great selection of exclusive releases. Like Grimey’s, a line tends to form very early, but if your intention is to stick around, eat and drink, and socialize after shopping, their plans for this year are looking like a great hang with an incredibly strong musical lineup, worth checking out even if you’re not in the market for vinyl.
WHERE: 1103 Calvin Ave; RSD releases are typically set up in a special row inside the store, with music outside.
WHEN: The shop opens at 9 a.m., and music begins at 11:30 a.m.
WHO: It’s a stacked music lineup this year, with Aaron Lee Tasjan, BEAN., massie99, Glamper, and more great local artists, all for free!
Here’s the schedule:
11:30am – Good Service
12:20pm – Josie Toney
1:05pm – Kelsey Abbott
2:00pm – Glamper
2:50pm – Julia Cannon
3:40pm – massie99
4:30pm – BEAN.
5:20pm – Case Arnold
6:10pm – Aaron Lee Tasjan
WHAT: Expect a great selection of RSD exclusives and inventory, live music presented by Acme Radio Live, food and drinks, vendors, a raffle, and more.
WHY: With its proximity to Grimey’s, it’s easy to hit both, but The Groove might be a good bet for folks who want more vendor and entertainment choices, or for the chance of a slightly shorter early line.
Vinyl Tap has been one of our low-key favorite Record Store Day stops for years (though it’s not such a secret anymore), as their selection is competitive and their early crowds typically a bit more manageable. This year, they again seem to be giving every other shop in town a run for their money with a really-expertly curated, expansive music and DJ lineup, plus food trucks, local vendors, tattoos, exclusive merch, and drink specials running all day long!
WHERE: 2038 Greenwood Ave; A table of RSD exclusives will be set up inside, and music and DJs will take place across both indoor and outdoor stages, with food, drink, and vendors outside.
WHEN: The shop opens at 9 a.m., and other festivities slated to kick off at 11 a.m. and music at noon.
WHO: Vinyl Tap, like The Groove, has an impressive slate of musical performances from the likes of ZZ Ward, Robyn Hitchcock & Emma Swift, Tristen, Winona Fighter, and many more, plus local DJ sets (including from Mayor Freddie O’Connell), all for free!
Here’s the performance schedule:
Outdoor Stage
12:00pm – ZZ Ward
1:00pm – Robyn Hitchcock & Emma Swift
2:00pm – Mount Worcester
3:00pm – Winona Fighter
4:00pm – Tristen
5:00pm – Bobby Rush
6:00pm – Weird Pals
Indoor Stage
9:00am – Black Abbey DJs
12:30pm – DJ Mayor Freddie
1:00pm – DJ Alanna Royale with Lucy Skrews and Coqueta
3:00pm – Starliner Sounds
4:00pm – Hello Honky Tonk (DJ set & dance lessons)
5:30pm – DJ Osho
WHAT: Vinyl Tap’s RSD festivities have grown so much that they might have the biggest celebration of the bunch this year, and a musical lineup that offers something for everyone. In addition to bands and DJs, expect a food truck park, an outdoor bar, an eclectic local vendor market, tattoo station, limited edition merch, 15% off non-RSD vinyl, and more.
WHY: You could potentially have better luck scoring what you’re looking for without camping out for as many hours, and the musical lineup and vendor market is worth checking out whether you care about shopping for RSD exclusives or not! This is probably the best option for locals who want the most laid-back, all-day neighborhood hang.
In the past, The Great Escape (with locations in Madison, West Nashville, and Murfreesboro) felt like something of a RSD hack, previously opening as early at 7 a.m., allowing for a chance to snag some releases and still make it to another store by opening. However, like the last couple of years, they’re opening their doors an hour later than they did pre-pandemic, but that still gives you a chance to shop hop should you so choose. Though better known for their used selection, The Great Escape does carry new RSD exclusives.
WHERE: 105 Gallatin Pike N (Madison Superstore) and 5400 Charlotte Ave (West Nashville).
WHEN: All locations (including Murfreesboro and two in Kentucky) are set to open at 8 a.m.
WHO: No live music at the Madison location, but the Charlotte Ave store- which has been throwing more performances lately- will host artists like Tommy Womack and Ben Scruggs throughout the afternoon (with Animal Control and Henry Daggs both set to perform in Murfreesboro),
Charlotte Ave performance schedule:
12:00pm – Ben Scruggs with Chris Scruggs, Kenny Vaughan, & Jared Manzo
1:00pm – Tommy Womack
2:30pm – Ned Hill & Tina Simpson
4:00pm – Max Langlinais & Peter Dark
4:45pm – Most Improved
5:30pm – Paper View
WHAT: While The Great Escape might not stock quite as many releases as some other shops, our experience is that their selection is still quite good, and usually features the most popular titles. In addition to RSD exclusives, both Nashville area locations are hosting store-wide sales, and giving away up to five free items from their $.99 selection, along with other giveaways and goodies.
WHY: Since they’re better known for comics, toys, video games, and used vinyl, The Great Escape might not be on the top of quite as many folks’ minds when it comes to Record Store Day, which combined with their earlier opening time can make them a slightly less-crowded option. Additionally, they have a lot of cool non-RSD inventory to browse.
Mostly known for their massive used book selection, west side shop McKay’s does officially participate in Record Store Day as well, and has been hyping up their focus on just offering RSD exclusives without any other fanfare. As a bonus, they also have a massive selection of non-RSD items to peruse after you snag some new releases, including tens of thousands of used records, which were recently moved downstairs for easier browsing.
WHERE: 636 Old Hickory Blvd
WHEN: Doors open at 9 a.m., with RSD releases just inside (and a huge selection of used vinyl nearby).
WHO: McKay’s RSD festivities are simply vinyl-focused, with no additional entertainment planned.
WHAT: Nashville’s largest used bookstore (with an impressive selection of movies, video games, collectibles, and vinyl as well), McKay’s is a great bet for anyone on the west side, and not too far from the Charlotte Ave. Great Escape location if you want to hit multiple shops. They stock a lot of RSD exclusives, though otherwise don’t get into much fanfare, and boast lots of other great items to browse too- including tens of thousands of used records.
WHY: We haven’t personally checked out just how extensive McKay’s RSD selection is, and they’re not predominately known as a retailer for new releases like some of the other shops, but given how much the advertise their participation, we’d expect a pretty solid number of RSD exclusives. They also might be a tad less crowded than the stores on the east side, while also offering less distraction if you’re just on the hunt for vinyl.
Analog Your Life (2546 Lebanon Pike) – Opened in 2022 in Donelson, Analog Your Life is another welcome new local spot with a neighborhood vibe. Though they also won’t have any RSD exclusives, they will offer free donuts and coffee to early risers, 10% off all vinyl, a 50% off red-tag sale, and a curated selection of classic “420” albums, with extended operating hours of 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
WHERE: 2546 Lebanon Pike
WHEN: The shop opens at 9 a.m.
WHO: Analog Your Life is keeping it vinyl-focused, with no other events advertised
WHAT: Opened in 2022 in Donelson, Analog Your Life will officially be participating in Record Store Day and stocking new exclusives this year, with more than 100 RSD titles advertised, as well as a 15% off sale on non-RSD vinyl, and exclusive merch available.
WHY: A bit smaller and much newer than the shops above, Analog Your Life might also benefit from not being quite as well-known a destination yet, and is obviously a convenient spot if you live near Donelson.
Downtown record shop Swaggie has only been open a few years, and is small and a bit tucked away, but well-stocked. Once again this year, they’ll carry exclusive releases, providing an intimate, low-key option for those looking to avoid the big crowds, and notably the only official RSD participant in the downtown area.
WHERE: 211 Union Street, at the ground level of the Stahlman Building.
WHEN: The shop opens at 10 a.m.
WHO: They’ve had DJs in year prior, but no live music is advertised this year (you can find plenty of entertainment at the nearby Cherry Blossom Festival in Public Square Park though)
WHAT: There have in years past been other downtown record stores who’ve participated- a short-lived second location of Fond Object, The Vinyl Bunker, and even the museum shop at the Country Music Hall of Fame- but Swaggie seems to be the one and only downtown locale stocking RSD releases now. They’ll also have 20% off the rest of their used inventory.
WHY: Though the Cherry Blossom Festival might make parking more challenging, Swaggie had a solid selection last year, and didn’t appear as crowded as some of the neighborhood shops, since they might not be on as many folks’ radar as a first stop.
WHERE: 100 Taylor St Suite A-22a, inside 100 Taylor
WHEN: The shop opens at 10 a.m. and 100 Taylor open at 6 a.m. (before that, a line may form next to the front garage door labeled “Lobby Entrance”)
WHO: Titans of Siren, Billie Sheers, and Creek are announced to perform, though we couldn’t find a schedule
WHAT: Dead End Records opened just last year, and specializes in punk, metal, and rock, which is also the bulk of what they’ll offer for RSD exclusives (they’re the one shop in town who actually posted a list of what they ordered, which is convenient). Going all out for their first Record Store Day, Dead End will feature some live music, vendors, food and drinks, and flash tattoos.
WHY: As we mentioned in our into, championing new shops is incredibly important to us, and you’re looking for the genres Dead End Records stocks (don’t expect to find any T-Swift here), the crowds might be more manageable than some of their better-known peers.
ADDITIONAL RECORD STORES
Third Man Records (623 7th Ave S) – Jack White’s Third Man Records has historically been one of our favorite stops on Record Store Day, as even though they don’t carry anything aside from their own releases, they’ve typically had a full slate of performances, activities, and exclusives. Since the pandemic, however, their participation has been been extremely limited, which is why we’re thrilled to see a little Record Store Day celebration returning to Third Man this year, with a free local musical lineup of slush, Family Dog, and Stunt Girl. We expect the shop to be open its normal hours of 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (always a fun spot to browse, though there are no RSD special releases we’re aware of), and music starts at 1 p.m., making it a great hang after an early morning record hunt.
Luna (230 Franklin Rd Ste 12D; Franklin) – For Franklin residents, Luna- located inside The Factory at Franklin- seems to be the best, most comprehensive experience in town, offering a selection of releases and a shopping experience that rivals any of the Nashville shops. If you’re a Nashville resident, there may not be a need to make the trek instead, though an early opening time and the ability to queue inside The Factory as early as 6 a.m., with all of its amenities, does sound appealing. RSD releases will be alphabetized on tables inside the hall, and used vinyl will be 20% off. Though they don’t have live music or other extras, Luna always stocks a fantastic selection of exclusives, making them one of the best RSD stops in the area. The shop opens at 9 a.m., but expect lines much earlier (you can wait outside at the Liberty Hall entrance if you wish to arrive before 6 a.m.) ##
Carpe Diem (212 S Margin St; Franklin) – Franklin’s first record shop Carpe Diem has been a little off our radar in Record Store Days past, but the small but well-curated shop not only has a killer used selection, vintage shop, and other wares, but also offers RSD exclusives (we’ve never spent RSD there, so we can’t vouch for just how many new releases they typically stock). Shopping begins at 10 a.m. with food (including a free hot dog with every purchase), vendors, and vinyl DJs. They might not have the quantity of nearby Luna, but they likely also won’t have as big an early crowd. ##
Phonoluxe Records (2609 Nolensville Pike) – Though it’s been in business for over 35 years and has one of the absolute best selections of vinyl in town, bar none, Phonoluxe Records seems, for whatever reason, to be more under the radar than the likes of Grimey’s, The Groove, or Vinyl Tap. Unfortunately, they don’t stock new RSD exclusives, but they are putting out tons of used new arrivals for the occasion, and if you’re simply looking for a spot to score great finds, check it out and thank us later. Phonoluxe is open normal hours, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Hi-Fi Frontier (in Dashwood Vintage & Flora – 2416 Music Valley Dr #115) – Another cool spot if you truly want to make the rounds, though not one stocking RSD exclusives, Hi-Fi Frontier is part of Dashwood Vintage in the Music Valley Village shops by Opry Mills. Like last year, they’re really getting into the RSD spirit, with live music (Dale J Gordon, Sophie Miriam, Joel McAnulty), a 15% off in-store sale, a vendor market (including Semi-Pro Records and Tapes), giveaways, and new vinyl. Hours run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Jimbo’s Records and Tapes (in Vinterest 2416 Music Valley Dr #124) – If you’re heading to Music Valley Village for Hi-Fi Frontier, be sure to pop into Vinterest as well to check out another record store within a vintage store on the strip- Jimbo’s Records and Tapes, which has been around awhile in several locations and incarnations. Don’t expect to find any RSD exclusives here, but they do have a well-curated, killer selection worth browsing, and they’re open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Alison’s Record Shop (994A Davidson Dr.) – West side destination Alison’s Record Shop has a great selection of vinyl, but, per usual, they won’t have any official RSD releases. Still, if you’re making the rounds or find yourself on that end of town (it’s a great post-McKay’s of Great Escape stop, if that’s where you choose to get started), they’re running a 15% off in-store sale for the occasion, and are open 10 a.m-5 p.m.
Elevator Vinyl (inside Lykke Haus Curated Vintage – 490 E. Trinity Lane) – Situated inside a vintage store just down the road from Grimey’s, Elevator Vinyl is another newer spot that isn’t officially partaking in Record Store Day. However, if you want to peruse their selection, they’ll be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the shop, and also running a pop up oneC1TY (8 City Blvd. off Charlotte) at the free Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair, which runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and boasts tons of other great local vendors and artisans.
Daydream Records (1006 Fatherland St. #104A) – The newest record store on this list, Daydream Records opened just last year in East Nashville, and exclusively stocks used vinyl, with a pretty solid and eclectic selection. Though they’re not participating in RSD, and probably never will, we wanted to give this shop a shout in case it wasn’t yet on your radar. On Saturday, Daydream will be open their normal hours of 11 a.m.-6 p.m., so if you’re shopping in East, give a new record store some love!
