One of the most beloved and influential emo bands to ever exist, if not quite the mainstream household name of some of the groups they helped influence, Kansas City rockers The Get Up Kids erupted onto the scene with their 1997 debut full-length, Four Minute Mile, following it up with one of the most iconic records of all time- emo, indie, or otherwise- with 1999’s Something to Write Home About. The early ’00s saw emo and pop punk explode at a widespread level, and in support of two further well-received LPs- 2002’s On a Wire and 2004’s Guilt Show– TGUK toured with breakout acts of the era like Green Day and Weezer, celebrated by the scene and always on the cusp of wider recognition, before briefly disbanding in 2005.
Just three years later, the group reformed once more, and have remained intermittently active over the last decade and half, releasing two further full-lengths- 2011’s There Are Rules and, most recently, 2019’s Problems, in addition to a couple of EPs- also still touring off and on, while maintaining commitments to various solo projects and other bands, as well as outside ventures. Still dialed into emo’s best era, the The Get Up Kids’ legacy and influence has only grown and been affirmed as interest in the emo scene surged once more in the 2010s, and they’ve managed to update their sound without wholly reinventing it, crafting punk spirited, indie informed, and emotionally resonant works throughout the second half of their impressive career.
Now signed to Polyvinyl Records, TGUK released a deluxe, remastered, and expanded edition of their scene-defining classic Something to Write Home About last year, in honor of its 25th anniversary, accompanied by a tour in celebration. Thankfully, they’ve expanded that run into the new year, and will return to Nashville on Feb. 1 at Eastside Bowl, where they’ll play the album in full- their first show in Music City since a brief opening set with The All-American Rejects and New Found Glory in 2023, and first headliner in seven years. Fellow ’90s indie/emo legends Hot Rod Circuit will open, and tickets are available here while they last! We’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan; preview the lineup and enter below.
