Best known for fronting one of the most influential and beloved emo bands of all time, The Get Up Kids, for nearly 30 years, as well as long-running acoustic indie side project The New Amsterdams, a stint in former bandmate James Dewees’ Reggie and the Full Effect, children’s music outfit The Terrible Twos, a lauded solo career, and more, singer-songwriter Matt Pryor is one of the most enduring, versatile, and seminal fixtures in the indie and punk scene of the ’90s and ’00s. While The Get Up Kids are still going strong, and are even set to hit the road later this year to celebrate the 25h anniversary of their classic LP Something to Write Home About, Matt has remained active and prolific on his own as well, most recently penning his first-ever memoir, Red Letter Days, which was released back in January via Washed Up Books, and collects journal entires, photos, stories, and reflections from the ’90s, chronicling life and experiences as an aspiring indie artist in a decidedly more DIY era.
In celebration of the book (and the intimate, scrappy musical spirit its stories embody), Pryor has been playing shows at many small, nontraditional spaces around the country in recent months, and the latest leg of his “Living Room Tour” (which isn’t necessarily all living rooms- he’s also been hitting spots like bars and record stores as well) brings him to Nashville tonight, June 29 for a FREE performance at East Nashville’s Nicoletto’s. Most of the stops of this tour appear to be ticketed, so this is an extra special treat for Nashville, and will feature stories and musing from the memoir as well as an intimate acoustic performance (which, looking at setlists from other recent stops, seems to pull mostly from his New Amsterdams catalogue, with a bit of Get Up Kids thrown in as well). The performance is slated to start at 8:30 p.m., and should be open to all ages, as it’s free and outdoors. If you’re a fan of The Get Up Kids or any of Matt’s incredible projects from the last 30 years, or a fan of emo and indie rock and general, you already know this is a must-see!
