Back at the end of March, on the heels of a residency at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival, iconic rapper turned experimental flautist André 3000 announced a surprise show at Third Man Records’ The Blue Room, mere hours before it went on sale and days before it was set to take place. Unfortunately, and despite seemingly spending those couple of days in Music City, the show was abruptly canceled last minute due to illness, with the promise of a makeup date forthcoming. That postponed event has finally been announced, and fans who couldn’t snag tickets the first time around should be excited!
André will return for not one, but FOUR performances in The Blue Room this time around, with both an early and late (6 p.m. and 9 p.m.) shows announced on May 29 and 30. Prior ticket holders for the March date will automatically have theirs transferred to the first performance (May 29 at 6 p.m.) and this time around, we have a tad more notice on the on sale, with the rest available tomorrow, Friday May 3 at 10 a.m. CDT (with separate links for May 29 early and late, and May 30 early and late).
Known best as one half of legendary hip hop duo OutKast, a project which has been on hiatus since 2007, save for an anniversary reunion tour in 2014, André- born André Benjamin- has gravitated more to acting in recent years, appearing in indie films like High Life, White Noise, and Showing Up. Last year, he returned to music with his first full-length solo album, New Blue Age, which eschewed his hip hop past in favor of a flute-centric, percussive, ambient jazz and new age sound. It’s this music that you should expect to hear at these Blue Room shows- nothing from OutKast- but if you dive into André’s latest artistic journey, you’ll find it equally as fascinating, moving, and unique in its own right.
