Given the sheer amount of talent in our city, Nashville artists always make up an impressive percentage of Grammy winners and nominees each year, and this year’s awards are no different with artists from, partially based in, and heavily associated with Nashville taking home numerous awards- including some of the night’s biggest prizes. Of the so-called “big four” awards, two went to sometimes-Nashvillians: Album of the Year to mega-star Taylor Swift , who still maintains a Nashville residence, for 2022’s Midnights (making her the first person to ever win that top honor four times), and Record of the Year to Miley Cyrus, a native of the Nashville area who now predominately resides in California, for hit single “Flowers.” Swift, who also took the oppurountiuy to announce a surprise new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which will arrive April 19, additionally took home Best Pop Vocal Album, and Cyrus won Best Pop Solo Performance, while both scored numerous other nominations: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (with Ice Spice) for Taylor, and Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (with Brandi Carlile), and Best Pop Vocal Album for Miley.
Though the rock categories are unfortunately no longer televised, two No Country favorites won big there as well, with boygenius (the massively popular supergroup featuring Memphis born, Nashville based indie singer Julien Baker, along with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus) taking home wins for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for their single “Not Strong Enough,” and Best Alternative Music Album for their full-length debut, The Record (and also scoring four additional nominations, for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Alternative Music Performance, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical). Elsewhere, preeminent Nashville alt rockers Paramore won Best Rock Album for their lauded comeback This Is Why, and Best Alternative Music Performance for its lead single of the same name.
Aside from R&B singer Coco Jones, who won for Best R&B Performance, the rest of the Music City winners fell into the usual country, Americana, bluegrass, and blues categories: Chris Stapleton won both Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for “White Horse,” Nashville-based alt-country favorite Kacey Musgraves, who also teased new music, won Best Country Duo/Group Performance along with Oklahoma’s Zach Bryan, Lainey Wilson won Best Country Album, Allison Russell won Best American Roots Performance, Brandy Clark won Best Americana Performance along with Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit won Best American Roots Song for “Cast Iron Skillet” and Best Americana Album for their stellar Weathervanes, the incomparable Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway won Best Bluegrass Album for City Of Gold, and duo Larkin Poe won Best Contemporary Blues Album for Blood Harmony.
Elsewhere, further Nashville artists scored dozens of nominations who ultimately didn’t take home any awards, including Jelly Roll and The War And Treaty for Best New Artist (Best R&B Performance winner Coco Jones- the daughter of former Titans player Mike Jones, who grew up in the area- was also nominated there, as well as for Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album); Jessie Jo Dillon and Shane McAnally for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical; Queens of the Stone Age, featuring Nashville’s Dean Fertita, for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song; and Dan Auberbach-led supergroup The Arcs were nominated for Best Recording Package. Dolly Parton, Billy Strings, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Rodney Crowell are among the numerous other Nashville based and affiliated artists who also scored nominations but ultimately took home no Grammys this year.
