It’s been over three years now since Atlanta born rapper Lil Nas X erupted out of obscure internet and TikTok fame to become the biggest artist in the world thanks to his juggernaut of a first hit, “Old Town Road,” a tune that caused controversy within the country scene and sparked a debate over genre conventions, spawning multiple high-profile remixes, the most prominent and successful of which featured country star Bille Ray Cyrus (who earned his first number one Hot 100 single ever thanks to the track). Swiftly proving he couldn’t be written off as a one-hit-wonder (even if his foray into country seemed to have been more of an early-career experiment), Lil Nas dropped his first EP that same year, racking up further hits with the likes of “Panini” and “Rodeo.”
For some new artists, a global pandemic at the height of their initial fame might’ve brought their traction to a halt, but, instead of the logical path of hitting the road, Lil Nas X took the time to craft his debut album, Montero, which dropped last year and has proven to be his best, most successful work to date, notching an array of viral singles like “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” “Industry Baby,” and “That’s What I Want.” And though the Grammy-nominated and multi-awarded 23-year-old has appeared on numerous major awards shows and SNL, has mastered the art of creating viral and meme-able content online, and has teamed up with stars like Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Jack Harlow, he still, three years in, has never toured. That all changes this fall though, when the rapper hits the road for a long-overdue run dubbed the “Long Live Montero” Tour, featuring an Oct. 1 stop at Nashville’s own Municipal Auditorium!
While, technically, Lil Nas X has performed in Music City before, it was for a brief CMA Fest appearance in 2019 at the height of “Old Town Road”‘s initial success, where he both joined Billie Ray Cyrus on stage at Nissan Stadium, and teamed up with him again for a brief rooftop appearance on Broadway at Ole Red. Needless to say, we’ve been eagerly awaiting a proper Lil Nas X show in town, and if you’re in the same boat you can grab tickets right here beginning this Friday, April 29 at 10 a.m. CDT. There are also several pre-sales running, including one for Cash App members who have a Cash Card, which might help you snag ’em early.
