Kacey Musgraves Announces New Album, Accompanying Film ‘star-crossed’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

We recently told you about Kacey Musgraves’ highly-anticipated fourth album, star-crossed, which is set to arrive this Friday, Sept. 10, along with an ambitious and stunningly-produced accompanying film of the same name, which will stream on Paramount+. A followup to critically lauded masterpiece Golden Hour, star-crossed serves as both a divorce album, chronicling the local singer’s split from ex-husband Ruston Kelly, and a broader thematic tale of heartbreak and healing, divided into three acts and inspired by classic Greek tragedies.

Co-written by Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, Musgraves’ latest is primed to be her most personal and vulnerable work to date, and also her most musically ambitious, expanding on the more cosmic and acid-soaked arrangements of Golden Hour to a sound more ethereal and dream-like than ever, with lush electronics and sweeping production that resembles something more akin to electronic or dream pop than anything typically considered country.

We got a taste with title track and album opener “star-crossed” when the LP was first unveiled, but, soon after, Kacey also treated us to another new single and first look at the film with “justified.” A tune about heartbreak and the time it takes to heal, the single’s accompanying video takes place on a long and surreal road-trip, where Musgraves ponders healing and the raw range of emotions and coping mechanisms that accompany it, over slick and moody pop beats and vibey hooks. You can watch the video below, and expect another new video spot, “simple times,” tomorrow night at 11 p.m. CDT (however that’s also when the film is slated to drop, and if these videos are simply portions of that larger work, as they appear to be, we encourage you to dive into the entire thing).

Finally, in more exciting news from the Nashville-based star, who’s been busy hosting pop ups and special screenings this week ahead of her album release, Musgraves has announced a small run of arena shows slated for early next year, including a Feb. 11 return to Bridgestone Arena, where she last headlined nearly two years ago, in the fall of 2019. This time around, Kacey has tapped buzzy indie pop singer King Princess and electronic pop outfit MUNA for support, two acts who perfectly compliment her latest sonic direction, and tickets go on sale tomorrow, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. CDT, here! There are also a variety of pre-sales underway now (try codes ‘LAVENDER’ ‘TWOLOVERS’ and ‘LIPGLOSS’).

Watch the new video for “Justified” below, and check out a full list of Kacey’s upcoming tour dates!
