Still reeling from positive praise for their most album, 2017’s Deadbeat Graffiti, beloved blues rock duo Black Pistol Fire are set to return to Music City for the first time since that same year tonight, May 7 at Mercy Lounge, along with fellow Austin rocker (and veteran of our Acme showcase series) Emily Wolfe. An electrifying and celebrated live force, if you haven’t yet seen what BPF can do in person, you should remedy that immediately, whether you’re familiar with their recorded catalogue or not. Tickets to this strong spring outing are still available right here, and you can read on for more about the lineup!
BLACK PISTOL FIRE
Made up of guitarist/vocalist Kevin McKeown and drummer Eric Owen, Toronto formed, Austin based blues and garage rock duo Black Pistol Fire are a force to be reckoned with. Fusing classic southern rock and more contemporary garage rock stylings, the band began attracting buzz after their eponymous 2011 debut effort and strong followup, Big Beat ’59, which drew companions to kindred spirits like The Black Keys, and nabbed the group spots on countless high-profile festival lineups. Several more fantastic records have followed, most recently 2017’s Deadbeat Graffiti, but BPF’s bread and butter has long been their live show, which has amassed endless praise and attracted a cult following, as well as spots performing with the likes of Gary Clark Jr, Weezer, Heart, Wolfmother, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Band of Skulls, among others. We’ve seen the band in concert on numerous occasions, and have left each time with our jaws on the floor. Needless to say, if you’re a fan, this show’s a no-brainer, but if you’re new to BPF, we urge you to see for yourself in person what all of the fuss is about! Plus, with a couple new singles released in recent months- “Black Halo” and “Level”- and a lengthy string of tour dates and festival stops on the books, we expect to hear plenty of fresh tunes ahead of an inevitable new album, making this the perfect time to discover or check in on this electrifying duo.
EMILY WOLFE
Also hailing from Austin, and a veteran of our Acme Feed & Seed showcase series from years ago, Emily Wolfe is an inspired choice to compliment Black Pistol Fire, boasting her own bluesy, genre-bending, eclectic rock and roll sound. Born in Raleigh, though raised in Texas from the age of eight, Wolfe took up guitar as a child, and continued to hone her chops until college, where she began to play live and formally pursue a solo career a few years back. After a string of early releases, it was 2014’s independent Roulette EP that helped the young rocker garner wider attention, leading to spots at ACL and SXSW, and eventually to share the stage with impressive names like Heart, The Pretenders, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons, and Gary Clark Jr. Earlier this year, Emily released her eponymous, debut full-length, showcasing her eclectic, refined, rock and roll sound and technical prowess, and all but guaranteeing that 2019 is set to be her biggest year yet. Be sure to show up early, or you’ll regret it later!
Black Pistol Fire and Emily Wolfe will perform Tuesday, May 7 at Mercy Lounge. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $20.
