Out in support of their smart, topical, critically beloved fourth album Relatives in Descent, Detroit artsy post-punks Protomartyr return to town tonight, March 2 for a headlining outing at The High Watt, alongside buzzy British post-punks Shame, celebrating their phenomenal recent debut, and local favorites TWEN. A band we’ve been obsessing over for a number of years now, each time Protomartyr make it to town, every time with a bit more buzz, is a treat, and it’s great to still be able to catch them somewhere up close and intimate like The High Watt. PROTOMARTYR

Formed a decade ago in Detroit, artsy post-punk outfit Protomartyr rose through the ranks of the DIY scene after cementing their lineup and exploring their sound, earning critical acclaim out of the gate with 2012 debut No Passion All Technique. Two excellent LPs, brought via Hardly Art, would follow, Under Color of Official Right and The Agent Intellect, the later which, especially, garnered high praise from all corners of the more discerning and trendy music press. Their increase in presence, still, has felt fiercely independent, and each time the punk-tinged, intellectual, poetic outfit return to Nashville, it’s with a little more buzz, a little more cred, and for a bit larger crowd. Thanks to last fall’s fourth album and first for Domino, Relatives in Descent, Protomartyr return this time with their best, most polished, and most socially conscious effort to date in tow, a stunning borderline concept album inspired by issues both local and global, distilling the band’s sound and booming baritone frontman Joe Casey’s lyrical prowess into a dozen tight, effective tracks. A band who definitely benefit from the energy and rawness of a live setting, whether you’re a longtime fan or just getting hip to them, Protomartyr promise to be one of the hottest under the radar tickets as we head into spring.

SHAME

British post-punks Shame only released their debut full-length, Songs of Praise, last month, but already it’s being heralded as a stunning, universally beloved effort from a promising new band we should all have an eye on. Having only recently ventured stateside for the first time, this marks the young group’s innamaagual show in Nashville, but with their unrivaled ability to bottle post-adolescent angst, and their earnest, anti-rockstar realness, it feels like a forgone conclusion that this band will be back and playing much bigger shows next time around- in fact, we wouldn’t bet against them becoming one of the generation’s most enduring, celebrated post-punk acts, should they stay on the promising course set by their phenomenal debut.

TWEN

A buzzy local fave, TWEN’s psyched out, genre-bending, jangly, garage pop have made them a prolific fixture in the DIY scene, and one of our favorite rising acts to watch, despite only having a live EP to their name (expect a debut in the near future). The Boston transplants are a perfect addition to any punk-leaning show, whether it’s in a basement or a club like this one, and they’ll definitely set the tone for a great night- don’t be late!
